Description:

Do you understand dog behaviour, have excellent judgement, and enjoy working with the public? If so, we want you on our Protective Services team! We are looking for a Dog Control Officer I (Relief) to help educate the public and enforce the Responsible Dog Ownership Bylaw in the Central Okanagan Region. This is a relief position that provides temporary coverage on an on-call as needed basis.

As the successful candidate reporting to the Chief Bylaw Enforcement Officer, you will:

  • Promote public safety and provide education regarding the bylaw and investigation process.
  • Follow RDCO bylaws, policies, and procedures while investigating complaints and handling dogs, excluding major aggressive and/or dangerous dogs.
  • Ensure and maintain detailed, accurate and timely records subject to the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (FOIPA) legislation.
  • Represent RDCO in disputed Bylaw Notices in Adjudication hearings and testify in civil court proceedings.
  • Follow RDCO procedures in the safe impound, loading and transportation of dogs.
  • Support the Dog Control team including assisting the Dog Control Officer II and/or completing Pound Keeper duties.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

To be successful in this role, you will have experience handling dogs, your Bylaw Enforcement & Investigative Skills 1 or equivalent, a valid BC Drivers Licence and your Dog First Aid Certificate. You enjoy working with dogs, have an excellent understanding of their behaviour and will use that knowledge to positively engage with them during handling. While working with the public, you will use sound judgment, be professional and maintain confidentiality. This position works independently and closely within a team to support public safety and provide a high level of customer service.
This is a relief position, meaning on call as needed with no set schedule. The available working hours for this position are Monday - Sunday on any of these shifts; 7:00 am - 4:00 pm, 8:00 am - 5:00 pm, or 12:00 pm - 9:00 pm. This position pays an hourly rate of $31.20.
