The Nepean Blue Mountains Local Health District Drug and Alcohol Service offers free, non-judgemental services and treatments for drug and/or alcohol use, including information and support for families.
Our service offers specialist drug and alcohol doctors, nurses and allied health staff who respect the client’s right to choose from a range of treatments offered with our services underpinned by a philosophy of harm reduction.
An opportunity has become available for qualified Research Assistant to join the Nepean Hospital team. The successful candidate will assist with increasing research in the Drug and Alcohol Service by undertaking a range of assigned tasks, including preparing research grant applications including literature searches, writing research ethics and research governance applications and coordinating data collection, collation and analysis. Key to your success is your knowledge and application of standard theoretical principles and techniques.
As a Research Assistant, you will write technical reports and prepare audio-visual presentations to support the research of senior staff and managers within the Drug and Alcohol Service. Responsibilities:

  • Relevant tertiary degree qualifications in the health sciences or medicine including demonstrated practical experience in the applications of descriptive and/or qualitative research methods
  • Demonstrated practical experience in optimising and developing research protocols, data entry and extraction techniques, presentation of data using graphs, meticulous record keeping, and working with minimal supervision
  • Demonstrated high level interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills including the preparation of correspondence, grant applications, technical reports and publications, audio-visual presentations, and newsletters.
  • Demonstrated practical experience in the use of Microsoft software packages (e.g. Excel, PowerPoint, Word); and at least one statistical package such as SPSS or Stata
  • Demonstrated practical experience and a commitment to work as a highly skilled member of a multidisciplinary team and to work on multiple projects concurrently
  • A sound understanding of the policies and procedures for conducting health research including privacy and confidentiality issues, the requirements around the storage of confidential data, and the principles of ethical research practice
  • Demonstrated awareness of the experience of stigma and discrimination amongst people with substance related issues, the principles of cultural safety, and respectful and non-judgement behaviours when working with socially disadvantaged groups in the community
  • Current Driver’s Licence and willingness to use for work purpose travel
