Description:

The Ontario Promise Corps program will leverage the City of Ontario Library and Recreation & Community Services Departments in partnership with the Ontario-Montclair School Foundation’s Promise Scholars and the Hope through Housing Foundation to host and maximize the impact of these AmeriCorps members in the community. The City of Ontario Library Department will engage AmeriCorps members to serve as early family literacy advisors to help increase literacy levels and school readiness in the community; the City of Ontario Recreation & Community Services Department and the Hope through Housing Foundation will position AmeriCorps members to serve as mentors for social-emotional development to underservice and economically disadvantaged youth throughout the community; the Ontario-Montclair School Foundation Promise Scholars will deploy AmeriCorps members to serve as college advisors, focusing on increasing colleges attainment though increased access to college resources and information. Collectively, the Ontario Promise Corps seeks to support student across the cradle to career continuum through the Ontario and surrounding communities, for a more prosperous future.
Member Duties : Members will build relationships and awareness of the program in targeted neighborhoods, recruit targeted numbers of participants, and provide workshop lessons to small groups of caregivers (8-12 per group) and their children. AmeriCorps members will provide supplemental practice through tutoring children aged 0-5 years of age to develop the children’s early literacy skills AmeriCorps Members will provide direct services and mobilize community volunteers to provide a continuum of educational and social-emotional support in under-resourced Ontario and Montclair neighborhoods. AmeriCorps members will use evidence-based literacy interventions as guided by his or her supervisor and will conduct assessments to ensure the participant is on track to read at the appropriate grade level.
