Job Description
AECOM is currently seeking an Ecologist to join our growing Ecology Team in Ottawa, Kitchener, or London, Ontario office.
The successful candidate will have relevant experience, be highly motivated and accountable, enjoy working outdoors, work well collaboratively with other team members, and be an effective communicator.
Individuals should have experience conducting biological/environmental field work, such as terrestrial vegetation surveys, wetland evaluations, wildlife surveys, breeding bird surveys, Species at Risk habitat screenings, aquatic habitat assessments, fish community sampling using a variety of capture gear, and reptile/amphibian surveys.
The position will involve working with technical leads to support ecological fieldwork in support of baseline studies, environmental impact assessments, Species at Risk permitting and mitigation plans, and related scopes of work.

Key roles for the position include:

  • Conduct data collection and field investigations to document baseline conditions according to study requirements in urban and remote sites in southern and central Ontario.
  • This position will require individuals to work remotely in rugged terrain within southern and central Ontario for periods of time as part of field crews based on project locations.
  • Conducting Species at Risk habitat and Significant Wildlife Habitat assessments and species-specific surveys.
  • Record and interpret data and effectively write reports in a scientific style.
  • Adhering to and enforcing corporate Safety, Health, and Environment protocols and AECOM’s quality control program.

Qualifications

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Ecology, Environmental Science, Biology, or a related field.
  • 2 years of experience of demonstrated equivalency of experience or education as an environmental consultant, industry representative, or other.
  • Valid Driver’s License is required to visit project sites, clients, and other AECOM offices.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Training and experience identifying flora and fauna of Ontario (e.g. plants, birds, amphibians, mammals, insects, fish, etc.)
  • Demonstrated experience conducting biological/environmental fieldwork.
  • Experience with air photo interpretation (hard/soft copy), Global Positioning Systems (GPS), and map and compass orientation.
  • Experience with Geographical Information Systems (GIS) is an asset.
  • Certified in Ecological Land Classification, Ontario Wetland Evaluation System, or ISA Arborist an asset.
  • Additional field experience such as water quality sampling or fish habitat assessments is an asset.
  • Highly motivated and willing to learn new tasks.
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office Suite with proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel.
  • Ability to work effectively in a team environment as well as independently and ability to work in both field and office environments.
  • Must be willing to travel (including overnight and up to 2 weeks at a time).
  • Valid First Aid + CPR.
