Job Description
AECOM is currently seeking a highly motivated and experienced Ecologist to be based in Ottawa, Kitchener, or London, Ontario office to support our existing activities and to grow our capacity to serve clients. This position is expected to begin as soon as possible.
The successful candidate will enjoy working on a diversity of projects, be an effective communicator, and be committed to producing high-quality work. The successful candidate will also have experience leading biological inventories, such as Ecological Land Classification surveys, botanical inventories, wetland evaluations, breeding bird surveys, herpetofauna surveys, Species at Risk habitat and Significant Wildlife Habitat assessments, aquatic habitat assessments, and fish community sampling using a variety of capture gear. Writing and other communication skills, organizational skills, and the ability to work well on multi-disciplinary teams are essential qualities.
The position will involve working with project managers to provide support on environmental investigations including baseline studies, environmental impact assessments, Species at Risk permitting and mitigation plans, and related scopes of work.
Key roles for the position include:
- Supporting planning, coordinating logistics, and executing ecological field studies.
- Authoring and coordinating the preparation of technical documents such as environmental impact assessments, mitigation plans, etc. that support regulatory applications and permits.
- Working with a large multi-disciplinary team to execute projects and meet client expectations.
- Assisting project managers with tasks such as monthly project and budget update summaries, preparation of meeting minutes, scheduling and coordinating field programs.
- Supporting the preparation of proposals and work plans.
- Adhering to and enforcing corporate Safety, Health, and Environment protocols and AECOM’s quality control program.
Qualifications
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Ecology, Environmental Sciences, or Biological Sciences or a related field.
- 4 years of experience of demonstrated equivalency of experience or education as an environmental consultant, industry representative, or other.
- Valid driver’s license is required to visit project sites, clients, and other AECOM offices.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- 5 years of experience as an environmental consultant, industry representative, or other.
- Knowledge and experience with federal and provincial acts, regulations, policies, and guidelines, in particular, the Endangered Species Act and the Species at Risk Act.
- Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills; comfortable liaising with clients, colleagues, and sub-contractors alike.
- Certified in Ecological Land Classification, Ontario Wetland Evaluation System, or ISA Arborist an asset.
- Environmental construction monitoring experience is an asset.
- Well-organized and strong time management skills.
- Proficient with Microsoft Office software applications and various research tools.
- Valid First Aid + CPR.
