Your team
You will be part of the Monetary and Economic Statistics Division in the Directorate General Statistics of the ECB. Our Directorate has around 350 staff providing statistical products and services, as well as a whole range of aggregated and disaggregated data, to inform not only central banking and banking supervision policy decisions but also the public at large. The Monetary and Economic Statistics Division develops, compiles and disseminates statistics and statistical indicators. It also provides related user services regarding monetary financial institutions, other financial corporations, financial stability and financial integration within the euro area and the EU, as well as general economic statistics, including prices and costs, and surveys on non-financial sectors. You will work either in the Monetary Statistics Section or in the Economic Statistics Section.
In your role as Economist-Statistician, you will work closely with users of statistics in the Directorate General Monetary Policy, the Directorate General Economics and other ECB business areas. You will also work closely with various teams in the Directorate General Statistics as well as statisticians in national central banks, national statistics institutes and Eurostat.
The ECB is an inclusive employer and we strive to reflect the diversity of the population we serve. We encourage you to apply irrespective of age, disability, ethnicity, gender, gender identity, race, religious beliefs, sexual orientation or other characteristics.
Your role

As an Economist-Statistician you will:

  • contribute to the migration to a new IT platform of data and procedures for producing and disseminating statistics;
  • participate in the regular quality management, compilation and dissemination of macroeconomic statistics.

Moreover, as an Economist-Statistician in the Monetary Statistics Section you will:

  • design, implement and test procedures related to the quality management, compilation and dissemination of statistics based on recast Regulation on investment fund statistics ECB 2024/1988.

Alternatively, as an Economist-Statistician in the Economic Statistics Section you will:

  • implement and/or enhance seasonal adjustment procedures for price, cost and/or other general economic statistics.

These positions offer you excellent opportunities to produce and develop statistical indicators for policymaking in a leading central bank. You will be part of a multicultural team that strives for continuous innovation to make a positive impact on the lives of European citizens.
Qualifications, experience and skills

Essential:

  • a master’s degree or equivalent in statistics, finance, economics or mathematics or another relevant field (see How you can join us for details on degree equivalences);
  • in addition to the above, a minimum of three years’ experience with regular statistical production, database management, time series analysis and/or data quality assessment;
  • knowledge of statistical standards used in the compilation of macroeconomic statistics (such as the European System of Accounts) or in processes for the exchange of statistical data and metadata (such as the Statistical Data and Metadata eXchange initiative);
  • in-depth programming skills in Python and/or R;
  • an advanced (C1) command of English and an intermediate (B1) command of at least one other official language of the EU, according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.

Essential for the position in the Economic Statistics Section:

  • experience with seasonal adjustment methods and techniques and their practical application to statistical time series.

Desired for both positions:

  • experience with testing IT applications and tools for data management, compilation and dissemination.

You engage collaboratively with others. You pursue team goals and learn willingly from other people’s diverse perspectives. You signal any need for change by explaining it and proposing alternative solutions. You analyse complex information effectively and can evaluate different views to arrive at solutions. You know and anticipate stakeholder needs.
You are motivated to contribute to the ECB’s mission, to serve the citizens of the EU as a member of a public institution and to work with colleagues from all over Europe.
You are motivated to be part of our team and to develop and use your skills and competencies to achieve the aims of this position.
