Description:

ENVIRONMENT AND GEOGRAPHY

We are seeking a Technician to join a team large from York, Sheffield and Durham working on a NERC-funded project that seeks to transform how we evaluate the risks of chemical mixtures to freshwater biodiversity in UK rivers for current conditions and in the future under climate change. The aim is to deliver a new assessment framework that accounts for the variability in the characteristics of a catchment and determines the combined impacts of mixtures of chemicals, bioavailability modifiers (including pH, suspended solids and dissolved organic carbon) and nutrients on the structure and functioning of species assemblages within the catchment at high spatial resolution. This will allow us, for the first time, to target interventions on chemicals and sources that really matter.

SKILLS, EXPERIENCE & QUALIFICATION NEEDED

  • HND/HNC or degree
  • Knowledge of working on chemical pollution problems
  • Ability to perform laboratory ecotoxicity studies
  • IT Skills such as Microsoft word and excel
  • Experience of chemical analysis methods for organic chemicals
  • Experience of COSHH and laboratory risk assessments
  • Experience of collating and analysing laboratory test data
    Interview date: Late September 2024
For informal enquiries: Please contact Alistair Boxall at alistair.boxall@york.ac.uk

Responsibilities:

Working in a small team of environmental chemists, ecotoxicologists and ecologists, the Technician will be responsible for generating and analysing data on the ecotoxicity of a range of chemical pollutants to different algal species. The position would therefore suit individuals with direct experience of laboratory ecotoxicity or environmental fate testing.
