Who We Are:
Heritage Park is Canada’s largest living history museum and offers visitors a chance to experience life in Western Canada from the 1860s to the early 1950s. The Park features historical buildings, costumed interpreters, working antiques, and various exhibits that provide insight into the region’s past.
Job Overview:
The Education Manager at Heritage Park will lead and oversee the Education team, which includes Education Programming Specialists, Education Program Developer, as well as Educational and Administrative Assistants. This role is pivotal in shaping and delivering engaging educational programs for diverse audiences, from youth to adults, ensuring alignment with curriculum standards and organizational goals. The Education Manager will coordinate program development, delivery, and evaluation, fostering collaboration across departments to enhance the educational experience at the Park.
Responsibilities:

Education Program Management

  • Oversees the design, development, and delivery of all educational programs at Heritage Park in collaboration with the Education team, including curriculum-aligned school programs, Homeschooler Days or PD camps, evening programs or Sleepovers for youth groups, such as Guides and Scouts, day and overnight summer camps and adult education initiatives.
  • Assist the Director of Programming and Experience in managing the departmental budget, ensuring cost-effective spending
  • Foster a collaborative and positive working environment, ensuring high standards of program delivery and staff performance
  • Analyze current processes and procedures and provide recommendations for process improvements, internal procedure changes and best practice applications to the Director of Programming and Experience
  • Coordinate logistics for educational programs, including scheduling, materials preparation, and venue arrangements, in collaboration with other Park departments
  • Oversee bookings, registrations, and payments, ensuring a seamless experience for participants and stakeholders
  • Work closely with the Marketing team to promote educational programs, enhancing awareness and participation among target audiences.
  • Engage with teachers, parents, and community stakeholders to gather feedback and build strong relationships.

Program Evaluation and Reporting

  • Conduct regular assessments of existing programs and make data-driven recommendations for improvements and new offerings
  • Collaborate with the Education Program Developer to ensure alignment with current curriculum requirements and educational standards
  • Report to the Director of Programming and Experience, providing updates on program performance and strategic initiatives
  • Utilize data and analytics to make informed decisions and enhance educational program development, delivery, and participant engagement
  • Monitor key performance indicators for educational initiatives and provide monthly status reports on program effectiveness and participation rates

People Leadership

  • Lead by example by providing day-to-day support to direct reports to enhance expertise and professional growth
  • Foster a collaborative working environment by communicating clearly, delegating responsibilities, and recognizing team contributions
  • Mentor and support Education Programming Specialists, Education Program Developer, as well as Educational or Administrative Assistants in their professional development, offering guidance and opportunities for growth within the organization
  • Manage workloads and delegate tasks and responsibilities as needed
  • Conduct regular check-ins and provide feedback to ensure that direct reports are meeting performance expectations and achieving objectives
  • Assess areas for development and provide open and respectful feedback in a timely fashion
  • Work with direct reports to create annual SMART goals and track and ensure regular communication for on-time goal delivery and completion
  • Lead the recruitment, onboarding and training of new staff on the Education team as well as the volunteers

  • Demonstrate commitment to workplace health and safety by complying with Heritage Park’s Health, Safety and Environment Management System (HSEMS), following safe work practices, reporting work-related incidents, injuries and hazards, participating in employer training, and adhering policies including the Code of Conduct and the Workplace Violence and Harassment Policy

  • Demonstrate responsible stewardship of our people, collections and financial assets by ensuring that they are handled with integrity, sustainability, and a focus on long-term benefits for the organization and its stakeholders

Required Qualifications:

  • A Bachelor’s degree in Education, Program Development or related field is required; a Master’s degree would be an asset.
  • Minimum 5 years’ experience in educational program management and development, ideally in a museum or cultural setting is required
  • Minimum 2 years’ experience managing a team including delegation, change management, mentorship and performance management
  • Strong leadership skills with the ability to mentor and motivate a diverse team.
  • Excellent organizational and communication skills, with the ability to engage effectively with a variety of audiences.
  • Familiarity with current educational standards and curriculum requirements.
  • Demonstrated strong interpersonal and communication skills in a client-faced setting
  • All successful candidates (over the age of 18) will be required to go through Police Information Check as a condition of employment.

Special Clothing and Equipment:

  • Business attire is required when working in the office, ensuring a professional and presentable appearance.
  • The position is required to wear a costume occasionally, appropriate costuming and safety equipment will be provided by Heritage Park; and
  • Footwear, as designated by the Heritage Park Costume Department, will be provided by the employee.

Special Working Conditions:

  • The position will be exposed to weather extremes and will work both indoors and outdoors; and
  • This position is physically demanding, and the incumbent must have the ability to lift heavy items, stand for long periods of time and walk throughout the Park for extended period.

Hours of Work:

  • The standard hours for this position are 35 hours per week;
  • The schedule will generally be five consecutive days per week (Monday to Friday); and
  • Occasional holiday, evening, and weekend work may be required
