Description:

Reporting to the Director, Teaching and Learning Innovation, the Educational Development Consultant, Indigenous Learning will work with faculty and staff within SPARK - Centre for Academic Excellence, and with faculty and academic managers across the broader college community, to fulfill the College’s teaching and learning priorities with respect to Indigenous ways of knowing and learning.
The Educational Development Consultant will work both independently and collaboratively with stakeholders in the design, development, and delivery of all educational development offerings (i.e. courses, seminars, events, and workshops) and will work with Faculties and faculty to integrate Indigenous knowledge and ways of knowing into courses and programs, systems, and processes using a systematic approach. An integral part of the work will be to ensure that faculty members and staff have experienced learning opportunities to support their understanding of Indigenous epistemologies. Given the service-delivery nature of the role, this person will be required to manage multiple priorities while being responsive to emerging and shifting departmental and institutional priorities.

THE SUCCESSFUL CANDIDATE WILL ALSO MEET THE FOLLOWING QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Master’s degree in Education/Instructional Design or related field (PhD preferred)
  • 2 years of experience and expertise in both development and delivery of Indigenous curriculum and education materials; preference will be given to candidates who possess a minimum of 3 to 5 years of teaching experience at a post-secondary level
  • Must self-identify as having Indigenous ancestry (i.e. First Nations, Inuit, Metis)
  • Solid knowledge and connection to Indigenous knowledge systems, the legacy of Canadian colonialism, languages, pedagogies, nations and communities; focus on the territory of Mississaugas of the Credit First Nations, Huron Wendat, Haudenosaunee Confederacy, and Anishinabek nations will be considered an asset
  • Deep knowledge and understanding of the TRC’s Final Report and Calls to Action with particular focus on those pertaining to education, the UNDRIP, Treaties, Aboriginal Rights, intercultural competency and anti-racism
  • Self-reflective and aware of colonial history and the impacts of colonization
  • Capacity to engage members of diverse communities and skilled in a variety of consultation techniques, protocols and strategies with the proven ability to listen to the needs of diverse faculty, staff, student, and community populations
  • Experience in planning, obtaining feedback, preparing and delivering training for faculty in higher education
  • Experience with online and blended formats and other educational technologies, including methods that are consistent and appropriate to the transference of Indigenous ways of knowing
  • Demonstrated leadership experience will be considered an asset

Responsibilities:

WHAT YOU’LL BE DOING

  • Maintaining close relationships with Indigenous leaders and departments on campus and with Sheridan’s Indigenous Education Council to ensure work is grounded, aligned, and collaborative;
  • Designing short- and long-term structured teaching and learning priorities and outcomes for the College and programs;
  • Designing resources, workshops, special events, and conduct individual and group consultations on incorporating Indigenous knowledge, ways of knowing and Indigenous pedagogies into teaching and curriculum in multiple formats (e.g. online, face-to-face);
  • Providing support to assist SPARK and Faculty representatives in the writing of program and course learning outcomes and proposals related to Indigenous ways of knowing and learning;
  • Preparing reports, planning and communications related to programming and specialized events;
  • Performing other related duties, as assigned.
