The Opportunity
As the Educational Laboratory Technologist I, you will provide laboratory support for diploma and degree courses in physics, statics and dynamics as well as occasional support of Academic Upgrading physics and sciences. You will work closely with instructors and other technologists to support daytime, evening, and distance lab deliveries. You will also support faculty teaching other courses such as mathematics and statistics to demonstrate hands-on applications in their classrooms. You will create and maintain lab scheduling processes and ensure labs have the proper support and supplies in place to run as scheduled, including preparation of materials, in-class presence, takedown, cleanup and disposal of materials.
This position will be responsible for maintaining clean, organized, and accessible lab supply inventory, storerooms and labs, as well as conducting regular inspection of lab equipment and facilities in compliance with safety standards. The position will work with instructors and other educational lab technicians on researching new labs and lab equipment and liaise with staff and vendors regarding the preparation of orders to support future labs and maintain regular lab supply inventory.
The Role
Setting out supplies for different labs such as physics, statics and dynamics, ensuring necessary supplies are available, clean and ready for use
Setting out equipment for labs, ensuring equipment is in working order and ready for use
Working with students directly in the lab setting under the direction of the instructor
Dismantling of lab equipment after labs, cleaning and storing of reusable lab supplies, and safe disposal of used, broken and outdated labs supplies
Maintaining easily accessible, consistently organized storerooms and labs
Conducting regular inventory of lab supplies and equipment, and preparing orders for vendors
Creating and updating electronic lab booking schedule
Working with instructors and the other lab staff members to collect information on existing labs and compile them electronically on a shared network
Working with instructors and the other lab staff members to find or compile new labs that will enhance the hands-on experiences of students
Supporting instructors in delivering hands-on demonstrations in foundational courses such as mathematics and statistics
Conducting regular inspection of labs and storerooms for hazard identification and prevention; requesting appropriate SAIT resources to conduct room repairs/cleanup/etc. to maintain safety standards
Conducting all work within SAIT’s Policies and Procedures
Other related duties as assigned
Qualifications & Experience
Minimum diploma in a scientific discipline, preferably in Engineering Technology
Minimum 1 year of experience in a laboratory setting
Strong knowledge of engineering technology courses such as calculus, physics, statics and dynamics
Possess strong understanding of safety practices in the lab (e.g., WHMIS, MSDS; First Aid an asset) and the ability to work alone safely
Must be able to lift up to 40 lbs and handle physical requirements of job (e.g., moving heavy/awkward equipment)
Equivalent combinations of education and experience may be considered
Skills
Strong interpersonal and communication skills required; must be able to converse technically with other lab staff, instructors, students, and chairs/coordinators
Intermediate level of proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, particularly Outlook, Word, and Excel
Strong organizational skills and flexibility are required, as schedules may change

Salary Range: $45,614.40 - $48,105.20
Paid Leave: 4 Weeks Vacation / 14 Flex Days per year
