QUALIFICATIONS

B S Degree Early Childhood Education or CDA Credential (Infants/Toddlers) required (or SC teaching certificate in Early Childhood Education accepted in lieu of CDA). B S Degree in a related field with some course work in Early Childhood (practicum other than preschool) would be considered.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
Two years experience in a preschool program desired, preferably Head Start.
Valid South Carolina Driver’s License required. Must obtain a Commercial Driver’s License within 90 days.

Responsibilities:

PRIMARY PURPOSE OR JOB SUMMARY

Has primary responsibility for the appropriateness of the environment, the correctness and completeness of assessments, screenings, and children’s records. Fulfills all duties and responsibilities as caregiver for children assigned to the Teacher’s primary care as specified for Early Head Start Program activities. Supervises and implements all activities in the Early Head Start environment. Screens children using the designated screening tests. Plans, evaluates and individualizes designated curriculum. Works with the Early Head Start Coordinator to facilitate the smooth operation of the early Head Start program. Shares responsibility for the professional development of staff supervised. Collaborates with parents and other community resources to address identified needs. Performs related duties as needed or assigned.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE THE FOLLOWING. OTHER DUTIES MAY BE ASSIGNED.

  • Implements approved curriculum to meet the changing needs of infants and toddlers.
  • Is responsible for a small group of children as their primary care provider.
  • Sets up the physical environment which is conducive to infants and toddlers growth and development.
  • Is responsible for the care, safety, and well-being of all children in the group.
  • Demonstrates verbally and by role model a sound knowledge of child development.
  • Provides activities, support, and information on a continuing basis that enhance parent’s knowledge of child development and the different stages.
  • Conducts formal screenings, assessments, and general daily observations of children.
  • Maintains accurate, up-to-date records and reports, submitting them as required.
  • Works cooperatively with co-workers and parents in establishing and implementing individualized activities for children.
  • Serves as a model at all times for parents, pregnant women, and volunteers in the demonstration of appropriate interactions with young children.
  • Conducts parent contacts and home visits in accordance with program goals and objectives.
  • Assists with transporting Early Head Start children and families as needed.
  • Is responsible for maintaining current CPR, First Aid, TB screening and physical as required by the program.
  • Assists with recruitment and registration of program participants.
  • Maintains a CDA Credential in Infant and Toddler.
  • Maintains a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) in good standing.
  • Seeks out advantages of training and opportunities to improve competencies, including training directly related to the Early Head Start cornerstones.
  • Participates in center and total staff meetings.
  • Supervises and evaluates Teacher I performance during program year.
  • Reviews completed reports, screenings, assessments, referrals, and daily observations.
  • Attends several home visits with assigned Teachers.
  • Participates in assigned training (local, state, regional, national).
  • Requisitions supplies and materials necessary to maintain smooth operation of assigned environment.
  • Performs other duties necessary to maintain a quality program for infants, toddlers, and pregnant women.
