Description:
Electrification is a key technology for decarbonization, and Lummus provides electrification solutions to enable our clients to achieve their energy transition goals. Process electrification will require redesign of heat transfer equipment from fossil fuel firing to electrified heating, safe supply of large amounts of renewable power from the grid to equipment interface points and conversion from steam-turbine to electric drivers. For this reason, grid connected medium-high voltage MW scale systems such as resistive electric-loads (heaters) and motor driven compressors will be specified and utilized to replace fossil-based loads.
Skills, Knowledge & Expertise
- Undergraduate degree in Electrical Engineering or equivalent technical field
- Minimum 3 years of professional experience in an electrical engineering role, preferably working with power systems, power electronics, or power distribution
- Hands-on experience with large power loads (such as motors, heaters, pumps) preferred
- Experience with Medium and High Voltage standards and codes, including the NEC, NESC, ANSI and IEEE standards a big plus
- Experience with AutoCAD, MATLAB/Simulink, eTAP or SKM, and Microsoft Excel
- Curious and creative and willing to learn by doing is a plus
- Works well as a member of a diverse team
- Flexible in working times to collaborate with colleagues across time zone
Responsibilities:
Lummus is seeking a talented and ambitious Electrical Engineer who is willing to learn the basics of power systems and grow. Specifically, we are looking for an engineer with a basic understanding of the fundamentals of power systems and power electronics and who can grow to drive innovation and support our electrification products and services. Responsibilities will include aiding in the conceptual design of interconnections (2-200MVA), supporting detailed design reviews, and coordinating design consultants. This position will also be responsible for developing protection strategy, coordinating procurement and bidding support for major equipment, acting as on-site commissioning support, developing punch lists, and testing performance plans. Experience with high power systems ranging from 200 kW to 200 MW, or other inverter-based systems is preferable. Although not essential, experience in the refining and petrochemical industry is valuable as well.
Key Responsibilities
- Support the electrical design and analysis of power systems, substation & power distribution systems & grounding systems.
- Conduct preliminary studies for grounding, lightning protection, arc flash hazard, backup station service sizing, and other studies required for grid connection.
- Initiate Requests for Proposal for engineering and construction services for substation and gen-tie projects.
- Conceptual studies, cost and planning studies, layouts, voltage drop calculations, specification development and electrical one-line diagrams.
- Develop technical requisitions as input to Requests for Quotation to electrical equipment vendors. Participate in the evaluation and selection of vendor proposals.
- Conceptual design and indicative pricing for project interconnections in development
- Prepare preliminary studies and single lines for interconnection applications and facility study applications.
- Coordinate engineering consultants to develop detailed interconnection construction drawings and support material from conceptual drawings.
- Review design deliverables provided by consultants and contractors for evaluation by management team.
- Respond to contractor RFIs during course of construction.
- Draft specifications for MV and HV equipment procured by Lummus, and partners.
- Review commissioning reports and analyze system performance.
- Effectively communicate technical solutions and concepts to other engineers and non-engineers
- Maintain knowledge of current and emerging electrification technologies and equipment.
