THE OPPORTUNITY:

Solvest is seeking a highly motivated Electrical Engineer-In-Training (EIT) to join our growing electrical engineering team! Since Solvest began operations in 2015, we have taken on and completed larger and more complex and exciting projects as we push renewable energy in northern and remote regions. Solvest goal is to be the leading engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) company for microgrids in northern Canada and Alaska, a company based in the North, for the North.
Reporting to our Electrical Engineer, you will ensure the accurate design of the electrical scope of large projects so that projects are completed safely, on budget and schedule.

This position is based at our head office in beautiful Whitehorse, Yukon, known as the Wilderness City and one of Canada’s top adventure destinations. While the position offers a hybrid work arrangement, we strongly prefer candidates who are willing to relocate here.

REQUIRED SKILLS/QUALIFICATION:

  • Degree in Electrical Engineering.
  • Eligible to register as an Engineer-In-Training (EIT) in Yukon, Northwest Territories and Nunavut to work towards Professional Engineer (P.Eng.)
  • Electrical engineering and project management experience with focus on renewable energy preferred.
  • Sound judgment in technical matters to solve technical problems and to make practical recommendations.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of industry best practice engineering standards used in the design, construction, and commissioning of construction projects.
  • Ability to work within cross-functional teams.
  • Strong sense of creativity and innovation.
  • Well versed with technology and software such as AutoCAD, Google Suite and Microsoft Office.

Additional Requirements:

  • Valid driver’s license with at least 3 years of driving experience
  • Criminal Record Check
  • Ability to travel to remote project sites when required.

Responsibilities:

  • Draft Single Line Diagrams (SLD) and layout drawings using AutoCAD for review by Electrical Engineer
  • Perform PV solar and Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) modeling for large projects using software such as PVSyst, PVCase, Helioscope, HOMER, etc.
  • Perform design calculations for PV solar system such as string length, cable sizing and power flow.
  • Prepare cable and balance of system electrical material estimates and schedules for large projects.
  • Use project management scheduling and budgeting systems to identify critical paths and track milestones and budgets for projects under your direct supervision.
  • Implement electrical quality control and quality assurance processes and tasks for construction.
  • Develop commissioning processes and tasks and client handover packages for large projects.
  • Collaborate with the Electrical Engineer and Director of Electrical to identify, develop and update Safe Work Practices Procedures (SWP) where required to ensure electrical work is performed safely and efficiently.
  • Act as the main point of contact for clients, vendors, contractors and regulators for electrical design questions and issues.
  • Develop design and drawings standards for consistency across all Solvest projects.
