Description:

OVERVIEW:

The Enrichment Systems Engineering Section within the Enrichment Science and Engineering Division (ESED) is seeking an Electrical, Instrumentation, and Controls (EI&C) Engineer for the EI&C Engineering (EICE) Group. In this group, we are focused on research & development (R&D) of hardware and software solutions for various enrichment systems that strengthen Oak Ridge National Laboratory’s leadership in isotope production and enrichment technology innovation.
ESED serves the nation in two critical areas: advancing enrichment technologies and exploring stable isotope production and applications. The division leverages an elite staff of scientists and engineers with the world-leading capabilities of Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) to deliver groundbreaking advancements with a variety of applications, from national security to life-saving medical treatments.
ESED is the national steward for the research, development, and demonstration of gas centrifuge technology. Furthermore, ESED continues to expand the nation’s stable isotope portfolio by advancing electromagnetic isotope separation technology. Beyond advancing current technology, the division is also exploring new ways to enrich stable and radioactive isotopes. The successful candidate will support the design, fabrication, and integration of I&C components of ESED enrichment systems to ensure ORNL meets the nation’s need for these vital materials and technology.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:

  • BS degree or higher in Electrical Engineering or related technical field is required, plus 2 years of related work experience or equivalent education.
  • Familiar with industrial monitoring and control practices, and a variety of sensor and transducer technologies.
  • Experience developing electrical drawings, schematics, and BOMs using CAD software programs.
  • Experience developing hardware interfaces for embedded systems, such as, ADCs, signal conditioning circuits, communication interfaces, power supplies, timing circuits, and memory.
  • Experience using M&TE such as DMMs, function generators, oscilloscopes, and programmable power supplies.
  • Experience developing design documentation, procedures, and test plans.
  • Ability to work both independently and in a team environment.
  • Demonstrated initiative and desire for continuous learning and professional development.
  • Proven ability to meet deliverables, manage task priorities, and adapt to scope changes while never compromising safe and secure operations.
  • Ability to hold and maintain a DOE Q security clearance is required.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Experience using AutoCAD and/or AutoCAD Electrical to develop electrical drawings.
  • Experience implementing designs using printed circuit board (PCB) design software(s) such as Altium Designer.
  • Experience with industrial automation and data acquisition hardware/software; preferably, Allen-Bradly PLCs, Rockwell Studio 5000 design software, National Instruments hardware, and/or LabVIEW.
  • Experience conducting work activities to meet Quality Assurance (QA) requirements and familiar with common Software Quality Assurance (SQA), Design Control, and Configuration Management practices.
  • Familiar with pneumatic systems, water cooling systems, vacuum systems, flow/pressure control systems, and/or motor drives.
  • Familiar with basic network configurations and experience with common industrial communication protocols such as TCP/IP, EtherNET/IP, RS-232, RS-485, Modbus, Profibus, and CAN/CANOpen.
  • Experience integrating, programming, and/or troubleshooting embedded control solutions.
  • Active DOE Q clearance.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain an HSPD-12 PIV badge.
  • This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q clearance from the Department of Energy. As such, this position is a Workplace Substance Abuse (WSAP) testing designated position. WSAP positions require passing a pre-placement drug test and participation in an ongoing random drug testing program.

Responsibilities:

PURPOSE:

Work with EICE technical staff to design, develop, integrate, and commission solutions to support I&C systems that are deployed for the advancement of enrichment technologies and isotope production. The candidate should display competencies in one or more related subject areas, work to solve technical problems using good technical judgement; manage assigned tasks and seek guidance as needed for accurate and timely completion, have a desire for continuous learning and professional development, and perform work consistent with ORNL’s Environment, Safety, Health, and Quality (ESH&Q) requirements, Safeguards and Security, and business rules.

MAJOR DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Work with EICE technical professionals to design, develop, and deploy hardware and/or software solutions for a variety of I&C systems for process control applications.
  • Maintain, and troubleshoot electrical equipment including electrical cabinets, panels, PLCs, circuit boards, and industrial sensor/transducer technologies.
  • Develop technical documentation such as panel layouts, electrical wiring schematics, test plans, and process instructions.
  • Evaluate hardware specifications and select electrical components required for control system designs.
  • Collaborate with EI&C group leader, project technical leads, and other ESED/EICE technical staff to establish requirements for executing work in compliance with ESED quality assurance program policies and procedures.
  • Ability to work independently, manage assigned tasks, efficiently execute work scope, and demonstrate competency in all relevant equipment and procedures.
  • Demonstrate ability to collaborate across technical disciplines and cross-functional teams to develop solutions for meeting project deliverables.
  • Participate in continuous learning, professional development, training, and process improvement activities.
  • As a member of the ORNL scientific community, you will be expected to commit to ORNL’s Research Code of Conduct. Our full code of conduct, and a statement by the Lab Director’s office can be found here: https://www.ornl.gov/content/research-integrity
