Description:

INTRODUCTION

Atura Power is the largest fleet of combined cycle power plants in Ontario. Our facilities are located across the province including Napanee, Halton Hills, Toronto and Windsor. This position is based out of the Atura Power Oakville office and will require regular travel to each of our operating plants.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills. Candidate will be asked to submit a technical writing sample;
  • Proficient in reading and understanding electrical discipline drawings including system one-line diagrams, relay and metering one-line diagrams, schematics, and wiring diagrams;
  • Working knowledge of Canadian Electrical Code, NEC, IEEE standards is required;
  • Working knowledge of NERC, NPCC, and IESO standards required;
  • Must possess a high level of attention to detail;
  • Must have strong analytical and problem-solving skills;
  • Must have good judgment and decision-making abilities;
  • Innovative, self-motivated, professional, and able to work and contribute in a fast-paced, multi-discipline team environment;
  • Ability to work independently to organize, plan, coordinate, and manage multiple projects simultaneously including providing daily field support;
  • Ability to embrace and lead change;
  • Demonstrated familiarity with project management principles and practices;
  • Demonstrated proficiency in the use of PC-based computer systems and software applications with an emphasis on Microsoft Project, Excel, Access and Word;

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:

  • University (Bachelor’s) degree in Engineering from a program accredited by the Canadian Engineering Accreditation Board or international equivalent as recognized by the Washington Accord. Program of study shall be in Electrical Engineering.
  • Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) designation recognized by PEO or equivalent;
  • +8 years of progressive experience in power plant related design and maintenance activities;
  • Experience in process and practice of conducting engineering studies, including power flow, short circuit, protective device coordination, motor starting, and arc flash analysis;
  • Experience with high voltage substations, transformers, switchgear, motors, generators, and other low-voltage electrical equipment;
  • Experience with design, installation, and commissioning of gas turbines, steam turbines, wind turbines, battery storage systems, and solar farms and related electrical and auxiliary equipment would be an asset;
  • Previous hands on experience at a combined cycle power plant is an asset;
  • Experience with control systems, DCS, SCADA, RTU, and PLC is an asset;
  • Experience with IBM Maximo is an asset.

Responsibilities:

Specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Retain and develop subject matter expertise on assigned systems
  • Provide technical support to plant operation and maintenance teams and troubleshoot equipment problems;
  • Analyze and assess equipment condition through review of field test data and other equipment-centered information systems;
  • Perform and direct investigative assessments, develop testing plans, perform equipment root cause failure analysis, and support equipment restoration activities;
  • Make independent interpretations and conclusions and communicate recommendations to management and other effected parties in a way that fosters consensus and facilitates efficient outcomes;
  • Initiate and execute comprehensive capital improvement projects that include developing clear definitions of scope, investment valuations of alternatives, cost estimates, schedules, and execution plans;
  • Support projects through review of engineering design documentation from equipment manufacturers and outside consulting firms including drawings, submittals, calculations, reports and other related information;
  • Evaluate and recommend various contractors and technical service providers;
  • Provide technical oversight and design verification reviews to engineering design by third party consultants and equipment manufacturers
  • Design engineered solutions to solve problems (or solicit internal or external expertise when work is outside core technical capabilities) to meet project schedules or other corporate objectives;
  • Develop fleet-wide equipment lifecycle planning of assigned systems
  • Ensure relevant documentation is retained in accordance with company expectations including: drawings, reference manuals, and other related information;
  • Utilize various central information systems to ensure accurate project budgeting and forecasting;
  • Ensuring projects are delivered on time/budget and the equipment and materials are utilized according to the required standards;
  • Advise on risk identification and risk mitigation with respect to assigned discipline and systems
  • Make independent decisions and communicate recommendations to management and other affected parties in a way that fosters consensus and facilitates efficient outcomes
  • Mentor and collaborate with junior members of the team
  • Must have unrestricted ability to travel within North America. Must be able to travel within Ontario up to approximately 30 days at a time.
  • Other tasks as required.
