Description:

Located in Newport, UK, the Severn Power Station stands as a vital hub of energy production, harnessing the power of its surroundings to generate 823 MW of electricity. Equipped with two units of SGT5-4000F gas turbines and SST5-5000 steam turbines, it epitomises the pinnacle of gas-fired Combined Cycle Gas Turbine (CCGT) technology. Serving as a cornerstone of the local energy infrastructure, it ensures a reliable and sustainable power supply for the region.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND WORKING CONDITIONS

Physical requirements include the possibility of standing for extended periods of time, stair and ladder climbing, routinely lifting up to 15 kg, and when necessary, use a respirator.
Protective equipment must be worn in the performance of some duties (e.g., hard hats, safety glasses, air masks, ear protection, chemical suits, gloves, and high voltage protective equipment etc.). Working with hazardous materials may be required. There are extensive smoking restrictions in and around the facility.

TECHNICAL KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND EXPERIENCE

  • Recognised apprenticeship (electrical preferred) and at least 2 years of experience post apprenticeship within the Power Generation sector or similar heavy/process industry.
  • BTEC ONC/HNC or equivalent NVQ level Electrical Qualification.
  • Experience maintaining electrical assets including motors, switchgear, transformers, and other HV plant, UPS emergency power systems, and electrical protection.
  • Conversant with the use of a Computerised Maintenance Management System.
  • Proven experience of Safe Systems of Work.
  • Experience/Knowledge of ATEX (Atmospheric Explosive) areas, CompEX qualification being advantageous.
  • Additionally, experience/knowledge of modern Distributed Control Systems (DCS), Siemens S7 PLCs, automatic fire detection systems, process control, and various process instrumentation (temperature, pressure, flow) would be beneficial.
  • The highest regard for Health, Safety, and Environmental compliance; IOSH qualification is beneficial.
  • Good attention to detail, planning and coordination skills.
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to build positive relationships with others.
  • Able to work on own initiative and flexibly to meet the needs of the business.

Responsibilities:

ABOUT THE ROLE – GENERAL SUMMARY

The Electrical Technician is critically tasked with ensuring the optimal performance and reliability of essential electrical assets such as motors, switchgear, transformers, UPS emergency power systems, and electrical protection systems through regular maintenance and repair. They oversee the safe operation and troubleshooting of high voltage (HV) systems, proactively addressing issues to maintain continuous power plant operations.

KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Perform routine maintenance and repair of electrical assets such as motors, switchgear, transformers, UPS emergency power systems, and electrical protection systems to ensure their optimal performance and reliability.
  • Oversee the safe operation, testing, and troubleshooting of high voltage (HV) systems to ensure system integrity and prevent failures. Address HV system issues proactively to maintain continuous power plant operations.
  • Assist in the maintenance and troubleshooting of modern Distributed Control Systems (DCS), Siemens S7 PLCs, automatic fire detection systems, and various process instrumentation (temperature, pressure, flow) to ensure smooth and efficient plant operations.
  • Conduct inspections and maintenance in ATEX (Atmospheric Explosive) areas, ensuring compliance with safety standards and regulations, and leveraging CompEX qualification if available.
  • Diagnose systems and equipment problems. Execute routine and non-routine maintenance activities in accordance with agreed procedures and operational requirements to ensure the plant is operating safely, effectively, and efficiently. Ensure safe working practices and procedures are adhered to within the work area.
  • Investigate complex technical problems relating to critical plant operations. Identify, diagnose, and report defects within the plant utilising the Maintenance Management system. Resolve defects while maintaining station performance and meeting operational targets by returning the plant to normal operating service in a safe and timely manner.
  • Provide callout cover in the event of equipment failures.
  • Manage and supervise contractors to complete maintenance as required.
  • Coordinate outage work scopes and packages.
  • Assist in the production of subcontractor work scopes.
  • Prepare work method statements, risk assessments, and plant operating instructions, ensuring the required level of maintenance for assets is achieved and records are maintained.
  • Use the site CMMS to prepare/manage work orders, order spares, and maintain plant historical repair records.
  • Carry out first-line maintenance activities, responding to emergency or unscheduled situations in the event of abnormal incidents to protect personnel and plant, ensuring compliance with safety and environmental policies.
  • Complete risk assessments and identify resources.
  • Provide service support to the Operations department, ensuring defects and the status of any maintenance activity are effectively communicated to the shift teams.
  • Support the delivery of low-value contracts, monitoring performance and reviewing with direction and support from the E, C&I Engineer.
  • Comply with Site Quality Procedures, Work Instructions, and EHS Policies and Procedures.

ANY OTHER REASONABLE DUTIES

  • Capable of carrying out the duties of an Authorised Person under the site safety rules.
  • Any other duties as directed by the EC&I Engineer as are deemed to be within his/her capabilities.
  • The Electrical Technician is responsible for the Health and Safety of him/her-self, any contractors working under his/her direction and in accordance with the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974.
