Description:

ABOUT US

Are you looking for an opportunity to make a real difference in your next role?
At Basis, our purpose is to radically accelerate the clean-energy revolution - starting with smarter, safer, and more efficient homes. We’re focused on improving experiences for people through the application of technology, data, and a deep understanding of human behaviour.
Why? As a society, we need to decarbonise and accelerate the transition to alternative energy sources. Existing solutions are expensive and disparate, with limited functionality.
Basis is driven by purpose, real innovation, and ambition. We have a talented team spread across New Zealand, with a creative space by the beach in Takapuna, and a Design Lab in Christchurch where our physical products come to life.
We’ve closed our Series A Capital Raise so we are well-funded and ready to grow. Our team is smart, curious and has some big goals - so if you’re interested in joining a fast-growing and startup that is design-led and puts people at its core, then we’d love to hear from you!

Responsibilities:

THE ROLE

To support the growth of our engineering team and R&D lab, we are now looking for another Electronics Lab Technician. This is a very hands-on role where you’ll contribute by supporting a wide range of engineers day to day in the lab, building and modifying circuit prototypes as well as keeping the lab stocked with the right components and consumables. With mentoring from our experienced lab technician as well as the wider hardware team, you’ll be able to further grow your skills in this role.

Some of the things that you might be involved in include:

  • Lab Equipment: Ensuring all our gear is running well, replacing, purchasing, wiring and organising as needed.
  • Stockist: Ensuring we have ample supplies of parts and materials to keep us humming. This can include running errands for urgent items.
  • Electronics Prototypes: We build lots of SMT prototypes and PCB assemblies (some in-house, some at our factories). You will assist with in-house assembly, modifications and other custom parts, and generally help prepare quick-turn prototypes for testing.
  • Mechanical Prototypes: Light fabrication to facilitate product testing. 3D printing, working with local fabricators, drilling and assembling.
  • Test Systems: We need to build lots of test systems, from simple jigs for testing concepts, to some really complex setups. Some of these will be small-signal systems, and some will be quite high power mains connected units. Work with our senior technician put these together, ensuring our wiring and connections are tidy and safe.
  • Testing: with all this gear, we need to use it for testing. You will no doubt be performing some testing to assist our R&D program!
  • Scripting: We predominantly use Python to interface and execute out tests efficiently. At the very least you will be proficient in running other people’s Python scripts, but there is also opportunity here to really grow this space, learning from our testing team.

Please note; this role could be based from Auckland or Christchurch, but will require travel for a few nights approximately once per month to the other location to support our staff with their needs, or for training and team support.

We think you’ll be a fit for this role if you have/are:

  • A tertiary qualification in Electronics, e.g. Certificate of Engineering or similar
  • Approximately 2 years (or more) experience in an electrical role in engineering
  • Demonstrable skills in electrical wiring, electronics and SMT soldering
  • Diligence in capturing outcomes and preparing documentation sufficient for the purpose
  • Familiarity with electrical test equipment such as multimeters, oscilloscopes, and methods of testing systems in an electrical lab
  • Ability to develop and run python scripts
  • Demonstrable experience in cable selection, termination, and safety testing for standard low voltage (230v) apparatus
  • A full driver’s license is ideal as you may need to run errands in a company vehicle from time to tim
