GENERAL POSITION SUMMARY:
Orenco’s Embedded Systems-Product Development Engineer works in Controls to develop both standard and custom products for core product lines as well as public bid projects, industrial applications, and OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) customers. The Embedded Systems-Product Development Engineer will design and develop embedded microprocessor-based controls to apply to Orenco’s products.

- Design hardware for remote monitoring and controls products.
- Develop firmware and software to interface and monitor Orenco’s controls in real time utilizing wire/wireless communications.
- Design and develop embedded microprocessor-based controls applicable to Orenco’s products.
- Configure and develop PC/MAC/Mobile based software used to interface and monitor Orenco’s controls.
- Effectively interact with multi-discipline team members, consulting engineers, contractors, operators, builders, and project managers.
- Coordinate with multi-discipline team members and vendors.
- Actively participate in team meetings, contributing ideas, opinions, and continuously seeking improvements in customer service.
- Work to be done during manufacturing business hours, however this position may on occasion work outside business hours to support department and business needs. Occasional long hours may be required.
- Regular, consistent, and predictable attendance is required.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
EDUCATION:
Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering, preferably Electrical or Computer Science.
KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/EXPERIENCE:
- Three or more years of relevant work experience.
- Programming with the C/C++, and assembler programming languages required.
- Other language experience, such as C#, VB (Visual Basic), and Java is a bonus.
- Experience with SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) and various RTU (Remote Telemetry Unit) platforms preferred.
- Experience in hardware design using ARM based microprocessors/microcontrollers, industrial digital I/O (Input/Output), A/D (Analog/Digital) and D/A (Digital/Analog) interfacing, and wired/wireless networks, etc. Experience with other processor cores is also relevant.
- Experience developing PLC (Programmable Logic Controller) code in multiple IEC61131 programming languages preferred.
- Experience developing HMI (Human Machine Interface) code for multiple vendor platforms and using Real Time Operating Systems.
- Experience in firmware development/debugging, using integrated tools such as IAR, KEIL Eclipse, and Visual Studio.
- Previous development using network protocols, such as TCP/IP, Modbus, etc.
- Software development experience for PC/MAC/Mobile platforms is a bonus.
- Familiarity with industrial networks is preferred.
- Previous contributions to product and system level test efforts.
- Effectively manage projects and make related decisions without constant direction.
- Proven organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple projects concurrently in a fast-paced environment.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills are required.
- Ability to successfully interact with individuals from diverse backgrounds and educational levels.
- Proficient with spreadsheet and word processing software.
- Ability to be flexible and adjust to priority changes with little notice.
- Ability to remain calm during confrontational or high-pressure situations.
- Ability to use sound judgement and follow through in problem solving and decision making processes.
- Must be willing and able to travel up to 10% of the time if/when business need requires. Must be able to comply with current travel regulations and guidelines of airlines and destination locations.
- Must be able to meet and maintain Orenco’s approved driver criteria; a valid driver’s license, satisfactory driving record, current insurance on personal vehicle, and meet company insurability requirements.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Regular job duties include seeing, speaking, hearing, reading, writing, legible handwriting, keyboarding, prolonged periods of sitting including extended time viewing a computer screen. Intermittent physical activity includes but is not limited to touching, holding, grasping, pushing, pulling, reaching above shoulders and below knees, low back bending, twisting, turning, kneeling, crawling, stooping, squatting. standing, walking, and climbing stairs and ladders. Light electrical panel assembly includes good manual dexterity and hand/eye coordination. Unassisted light lifting and/or carrying of under 20 lbs. is required. May also include occasional unassisted lifting and/or carrying of up to 50 lbs., lifting and/or carrying over 50 lbs. must be assisted.
Operation of a motor vehicle and/or airplane travel may be required. Travel needs are determined by the department supervisor and based on business need and assigned job tasks and responsibilities. Travel may require the ability to visit project sites that are situated on a variety of developed and undeveloped terrain/locations
