Responsibilities:

OVERVIEW OF ROLE:

The post holder is responsible for maintaining infection control practices in the decontamination process, be able to relate to chemicals and detergents in use and management of spills and to aassist in the smooth and effective running of the Endoscopy Unit

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Knowledge of good Infection control Practices in relation to Endoscope decontamination.
Practice effective hand hygiene technique and follow the required PPE correctly.
Identifies the chemicals used in the washroom, including correct storage, handling and disposal of same.
Knowledge of splash injury procedure.
Knowledge of the Safety Data Sheets for chemicals and how to locate used and how to manage a chemical spill.
Ability to identify key requirements for the management of environmental hygiene to include deep clean of the washroom.
Demonstrates knowledge of environmental risks associated with cross contamination and how these risks can be controlled.
Knowledge of and the ability to correctly identify each type and model of scope to include, gastroscope, colonoscope and flexible cystoscope.
The ability to correctly identify all scope channels, correct brush sizes and connectors.
Ability to operate all Endoscopy decontamination equipment including leak tester and Flushtech system.
Demonstrates correct procedure to follow in the event that the endoscope is damaged.
Knows the proper packing and transport requirements for returning scopes for repair, including documentation.
Ability to identify each stage of the decontamination process from bedside pre-cleaning to manual sink washing, to reprocessing in the EWD, storage and re-use.
Understands the manual cleaning is the initial and most crucial step in breaking the chain of disease transmission.
Competent in the process of protein soil testing of endoscopes weekly and knows why the above is performed.
Identifies the requirement for each endoscope to have a unique tracking number linked to Wassenburg Reprocessors and Drying Cabinet.
Understands the importance of traceability and ability to keep endoscopy traceability records.
Knowledge that each endoscope has a unique set of accessories.
Ability to effectively manually wash an endoscope including use of the Flushtech system.
Demonstrates the ability to operate effectively the Wassenburg Endoscopic Washer Disinfector (EWD).
Understands the EWD cycle and can identify if the cycle has passed or failed.
Knowledge of the daily and weekly checks on the EWD including the Process Challenge Test.
Demonstrates knowledge of the importance of the water quality and ability to perform water sampling for monthly lab testing.
Demonstrates a working knowledge of the functions and controls of the Wassenburg Dry 320 Storage Cabinet.
Ability to load and unload endoscopes safely and correctly.
Knows the duration that endoscopes can be stored in the cabinet and how soon they need to be placed in the cabinet after reprocessing in the EWD.
Identifies daily checks and cleaning regime for the Wassenburg Dry 320.
Ability to maintain proper records of procedures performed in the washroom to include:
Daily / weekly machine checks.
Traceability records.
Endoscope repair records.
Water sampling records.
Protein soil testing results.
Process challenge results on EWD.
Thermal Disinfection on EDW Records.
Wassenburg EWD and Dry 320 Cabinet service and validation record.
Ability to locate guidance documents/policies/procedures in the department.
Up-to-date with attendance to Olympus and Wassenburg training sessions and any other study days relevant to Decontamination in Endoscopy.
Responsible for the collection and transportation of used items.
Responsible for cleaning trollies, storage shelves, containers and all other equipment in the department.
Responsible for every stage of the decontamination process.
Effectively communicate requests from relevant departments.
Ability to access all documents and policies through the hospital quality management system – Q Pulse
Education, Training & Development
Attend in-service training sessions where possible and keep abreast of developments and trends within the clinical speciality and professions as a whole.
Report back to staff/CNMII any changes in best practice following attendance to study days.
Ensure that all staff are familiar with Fire Regulations of the hospital and within the Ward / Department including the location and exits. Attend fire lecture annually.
Take responsibility for own learning and development needs and actively contribute to the learning and development of the multidisciplinary team.
Contribute to the identification of training needs pertinent to the clinical area.
Identify and contribute to the continual enhancement of learning opportunities in the clinical area.
Provide education and information to patient or family as required.
Accreditation
Will familiarise themselves with policies, procedures and guidelines directly related to their clinical care and area.
Assist in the review of policies, procedures and Guidelines under the direction of the chapter lead/department manager.
Lean
Lead, facilitate and participate in lean projects with all disciplines and departments of the hospital
Support and participate with others to problem solve and continuously improve through the use of the lean tools and techniques
Attend/participate on-site training as required
