Alberta Newsprint Company (ANC), a joint venture of the Stern Group and West Fraser Timber Company Ltd., is a leading manufacturer of premium paper products. In addition to our newsprint mill, ANC operates a 65 MW power plant that supplies energy to our operations and the Alberta grid. We are dedicated to innovation and continuous improvement, actively pursuing new business development projects and upgrades to enhance our operations and sustainability efforts.
We are seeking a dynamic and motivated Energy and Compliance Engineer to join our team on a 1-year contract to assist with various energy-related initiatives and compliance tasks. This position is located on-site at our Whitecourt, AB mill site facility.

REQUIREMENTS OF THE ENERGY AND COMPLIANCE ENGINEER:

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering, engineering technology, business, or a related field with an emphasis on energy and facilities management.
  • Minimum of 1-3 years prior experience in energy management, mechanical or process systems design, construction, operation, and/or maintenance, or a closely related field is preferred.
  • Previous experience that provides a working knowledge of energy management program development
  • Previous experience managing budgets and personnel,
  • Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills.

QUALIFICATIONS OF THE ENERGY AND COMPLIANCE ENGINEER:

  • Solid technical background.
  • Industry-based experience.
  • Commitment to safety.
  • Ability to build strong and supportive relationships with coworkers.
  • Good communication and technical skills
  • Good knowledge of Microsoft suite (Excel, PowerPoint), Power BI and new technologies.

Responsibilities:

  • Assist in preparation of procedures to ensure compliance with Alberta Reliability Standards for the Power Plant.
  • Work with the Energy Coordinator closely to analyze and report on energy consumption to reduce costs for the mill and power plant.
  • Develop and maintain energy management procedures and train operators on various initiatives that are newly developed.
  • Assist in Tracking energy usage, implement policies and strategies to reduce energy usage, and increase efficiency.
  • Collaborate with external parties on energy audits and implement findings.
  • Participate in monthly KPI presentations and provide operator training.
  • Collect and report GHG emission data for verification and compliance.
  • Identify and apply for federal and provincial funding for energy and GHG reduction projects.
  • Communicate energy performance and strategies to stakeholders, including senior management.
