The Alberta Electric System Operator (AESO) is responsible for the safe, reliable, and economic planning and operation of the Alberta Interconnected Electric System. We are looking for a talented Engineer or Analyst to join our Grid Analytics (GA) team. GA is a cross-functional team that is responsible for performing data-intensive engineering studies and providing analytical services. The engineering studies focus on the interaction between the electricity market and the transmission system, which includes congestion and capability assessments.
In this position, you will support and expand probabilistic engineering assessments and analytical activities. This is a great opportunity for a data and electricity industry enthusiast interested in advancing the AESO’s ability to analyze the transmission system. It plays an essential role in executing and advancing predictive analytics methodology, tools, and applications to enhance Grid Reliability practices and inform decision-making.

Accountabilities include but are not limited to:
- Execute risk-based, probabilistic engineering studies, including capability and congestion assessments.
- Develop and enhance congestion assessments, including tools and processes.
- Deliver advanced analytics to solve business problems, drive value, and improve optimization and efficiency.
- Ongoing development and maintenance of the congestion nodal models to ensure credible nodal analytics, streamlined process, and quality documentation.
- Work cross-functionally to evaluate current processes, research, develop and execute plans to enhance, optimize, and innovate predictive analytical tools and procedures.
What you’ll bring to us:
- A bachelor’s degree in engineering with a focus on electrical engineering or analytics.
- Registration with APEGA as a Professional Engineer (P.Eng.), or eligibility to register (optional).
- 5+ years’ experience in the power industry.
- Experience in performing statistical analysis and employing optimization techniques.
- Experience with power flow studies and python scripting.
- Experience with data query, maintenance, and use of databases (SQL server, Oracle).
- Experience working with data and visualization.
- Previous market simulation modelling experience (Aurora, Uplan, or Plexos).
- Solid knowledge of a variety of machine learning techniques, advanced statistical techniques, and experience with applications.
