JOB SUMMARY

The Engineer, Technical Standards is responsible for the creation and on-going maintenance of Hydro Ottawa’s technical standards, specifications, procedures, policies, standard work methods and training material to support distribution activities and customer connections.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • Licensed Professional Engineer, or able to be licensed in the province of Ontario
  • Undergraduate degree in Engineering from an accredited university
  • Strong project management and communication skills (both oral and written)
  • Demonstrated knowledge of National Standards and Codes that apply to substations and distribution systems
  • Strong computer skills, expertise in the use of Microsoft Office Suite of products
  • English essential, both oral and written; Bilingual (French/English) considered an asset
  • Valid driver’s licence – Class G
  • Experience in an electric utility and/or utility standards environment considered an asset
  • Experience with utility modeling software such as Cyme, SAG10, and SpidaCalc considered an asset
    This is a management group opportunity and salary will be commensurate with qualifications.

Responsibilities:

  • Develop, implement, and manage technical policies, standards, specifications, standard work methods (SWM), and procedures for the distribution system.
  • Approve technical standards and standard work methods within the technical signing authority procedure.
  • Provide technical support and assistance in the planning, design, construction, and maintenance of the distribution system, to other internal Business Units.
  • Provide technical support and recommendations for Conditions of Service, external utility/municipal circulations, road authority and third party attachments to internal staff, the City, other utilities, and external standards committee(s).
  • Oversee internal Standards and SWMs Committees, technically and administratively with their mandate and chair these committees as required.
  • Participate on industry committees as a representative of Hydro Ottawa
  • Provide technical support in the creation, review and recommendation of changes to agreements and legal documents related to the distribution system.
  • Conduct technical studies and analyze technical processes and equipment failures. Prepare reports with recommendations relating to failures and the complete distribution system.
  • Inspect projects and field installations to improve processes, and assess equipment and materials.
  • Provide technical support on the development and delivery of health, safety, and environment programs.
  • Develop and deliver technical training material that relates to this position’s responsibilities.
  • Assist with divisional response and support for O.Reg. 22/04.
  • Participate in the Emergency Response Organization and On-Call.
  • Lead special projects, as required
  • Perform other related duties as required.
