ADDITIONAL DETAILS:

We are seeking a motivated and dynamic co-op student to help the City of New Westminster’s Infrastructure Planning Division. Beginning approximately early January, this position will assist the division’s engineers in various projects related to Utility Engineering (Water, Drainage, Sanitary, Flood Protection, Integrated Storm Water Management), and other projects as assigned.
The duties include: Technical analysis, research and documentation related to the work; Collecting, maintaining, and summarizing a range of data sets, records, reports; Research and analysis; Document management; Public and stakeholder engagement; Field work; JDE support (financial accounting); Coordinate with other branches for Infrastructure/Utility Planning and ISMP project opportunities. In addition, you will perform technical tasks including using ESRI ArcGIS Pro to obtain spatial and attribute data from the City’s GIS team, preparing maps, plans, reports, calculation sheets, and other tasks assigned.
This 8 month co-op term will start approximately January 2, 2025 and will conclude by approximately August 29, 2025.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Student in a civil engineering program, with an understanding and interest in municipal Infrastructure Planning (Water, Drainage, Sanitary, and Asset Management).
  • Considerable knowledge of civil engineering principles, terminology, practices and techniques
  • Sound experience in using Microsoft Office applications including Outlook, Word, Excel and Powerpoint
  • Knowledge of computer assisted mapping techniques, procedures and software, such as AutoCAD, ESRI ArcGIS Pro, and relational databases would be an asset.
  • Knowledge of Storm Water Management Best Practices and the role of green infrastructure in the Environment
  • Awareness of and appreciation for the roles and responsibilities of the external agencies involved in engineering issues affecting the City.
  • Ability to administer assigned engineering projects, collect, research, organize, analyze and/or synthesize technical, statistical, and related data and information
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with people at all levels, both inside and outside of the City
  • Ability to read and interpret plans, specifications, technical reports and related material.
  • Ability to prepare and maintain records, reports, correspondence and various other work-related materials.
  • Ability to communicate clearly, both verbally and in writing.
  • Valid Class 5 BC Driver’s License would be an asset.
  • The successful candidate may participate in public consultation processes and will have the flexibility to work in the evenings and on weekends as required.
