Transportation Services is seeking two Engineering Technologist Technician 1s who will work in the Planning, Design & Management section, specifically in the Asset Management unit and the Vision Zero Projects unit.
YOUR APPLICATION MUST DESCRIBE YOUR QUALIFICATIONS AS THEY RELATE TO:
- Post-secondary education in an accredited Engineering Technology or Civil Engineering program or approved equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Considerable experience in one or more of the following fields: design and construction of municipal roads/pavements, pedestrian and cycling facilities, intersection reconfigurations, traffic engineering, road safety, transit planning, retaining structures, geotechnical engineering and/or transportation infrastructure management.
- Considerable experience in reading and interpreting technical drawings and plans as well as preparing drafts of contract documents including writing specifications and estimating quantities.
- Considerable experience utilizing Computer Aided Design and Drafting (CADD) software such as Bentley Microstation, AutoTURN and InRoads to produce alignments, profiles, cross-sections, pavement markings and barrier/divider designs, as well as other computer software including MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) in a design environment.
- Considerable experience with Geographical Information Systems (GIS) software, such as ESRI ArcGIS.
Must possess and maintain a valid Province of Ontario Class “G” Driver’s License and the ability to obtain a City’s Driver’s permit.
Responsibilities:
- Prepares engineering road designs, pavement marking plans, drawings, maps, sketches and reports for existing and proposed motor vehicle roadways, on and off street bikeways, sidewalks and intersection reconfigurations using Computer Aided Design and Drafting (CADD) software (Bentley Microstation & InRoads).
- Administers, prepares, co-ordinates requirements and reviews designs, reports, specifications and any documentation related to complex traffic operations issues.
- Conducts, investigations, and studies for a variety of proposals, programs, land development applications and projects pertaining to the City’s facilities and infrastructure for completeness, accuracy and conformance to City of Toronto’s standards.
- Assesses the technical feasibility of transferring, closing or acquiring public highways including roads, laneways and walkways.
- Assesses and makes recommendations for the classification of roads, laneways and walkways based on the City’s Road Classification System.
- Prepares, reads and interprets technical drawings and plans.
- Reviews and prepares technical comments on the area traffic control proposals, roadway geometric design, pedestrian and cycling issues, public transit issues, traffic signals, pavement marking, traffic and parking regulations.
- Checks and provides progress/inspection reports on the work of contractors or operational staff to ensure use of safety equipment, adherence to approved designs/ plans, procedures, regulations, statutes, specifications etc., as well as ensures equitable and safe use of the right-of-way and compliance with the City policies, design guidelines and other regulations.
- Assists with the preparation of budget and tracking of expenditures.
- Assists in the undertaking complex financial analyses related to transportation programs and makes recommendations on program changes and divisional priorities.
- Participates in the design, implementation, maintenance and on-going support of GIS projects and databases, and of requests that require the creation of custom data sets, and the delivery of cartographic products.
- Assists Engineers, Project Managers and other management staff and carries out work technical work for the planning design, tendering construction and inspection of municipal infrastructure.
- Conducts and/or reviews traffic analysis including: analysis of traffic speed, traffic signal timing and progression, volume and collision data, traffic pattern trends for application to site specific solutions.
- Liaises and assist with utility companies, developers, public, contractors, consultants, BIAs, City divisions and districts, elected officials, etc. to resolve problems.
- Conducts field surveys, investigations, review of existing conditions and studies related to multi-modal safety, planning processes, new capital project design, transferring, closing and acquiring lands, and may be required to troubleshoot with regard to job site problems.
- Develops, maintains and monitors programs and systems.
- Interprets, transcribes and translates information from aerial photographs into digital data.
- Investigates and responds to inquiries from the public, consultants, contractors related to technical, contract or design projects and participates in public consultations.
- Prepares reports to Committees and Council, prepares briefing notes for the Supervisor/manager.
- Participates in various committees and working groups
