Position Summary
Reporting to the Director, Flight Operations, the Engineering Test Pilot is responsible to conduct ground and flight testing on behalf of De Havilland Aircraft of Canada for the purposes of aircraft development and certification. The Pilot also provides technical expertise in the creation of flight manuals and operational documents.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Provide test planning, test readiness, and safety of flight reviews for test operations.
- Conduct developmental and certification flight tests on experimental airplanes as Pilot-In-Command
- Communicate to engineering and project personnel on the planning, conducting and results of the tests.
- Observe company and Transport Canada rules and regulations, and proper use of safety and risk mitigation methods and the safe operation of equipment.
- Support preliminary design review process with respect to pilot interface and human factors issues.
- Provide technical expertise related to flight test and aircraft operational issues in support of design development activities.
- Oversee and audit the technical content of all test procedures.
- Provide technical leadership as project pilot to other test pilots and flight test engineers assigned to the same flight test program.
- Provide the central point of contact for all pilot/operational issues throughout the program.
- Review and provide inputs for flight manuals, flight manual supplements, pilot manuals and other technical engineering reports. Often is assigned as a focal ‘Project Pilot’ for a product line or model.
- Conduct briefing for company management reviews, Transport Canada, FAA and other foreign Certification Authorities or groups as necessary.
- Act as direct liaison with test pilot group in Transport Canada on specific technical or schedule issues.
- Producing detailed written reports to describe test results and aircraft or system discrepancies.
- Responsible for the accurate and timely completion of all applicable pre and post flight documentation
- Complete all post flight duties, including notification to company of the location of the airplane when away from base, recording flight times and any defects as assigned.
- Participate in pre- and post-flight crew briefings.
- Support daily operation activities.
- Conduct International Sales and Marketing Demo flights.
- Perform additional duties as assigned.
Education and Professional Qualifications
- Bachelor’s or higher university degree in Aerospace Engineering or related discipline
- Valid Airline Transport Pilot License TC, FAA or EASA with a rating on a large turbo-prop aircraft type
- 4,000 hours of total flying time and a minimum of 1000 hours of command time on a large turbo-prop aircraft
- Prior experience as a DAD/DER Test Pilot or are highly familiar with TC, FAA or EASA flight test procedures and requirements, and have significant practical knowledge and a minimum of ten (10) years flight test and certification experience as an Engineering Test Pilot
- Proven ability to execute the duties of an aircraft commander while maintaining a positive and cooperative relationship with the crew, management, and the customers.
- Have the ability and willingness to work irregular hours and workdays, and travel on short notice.
- Preferred Qualifications
- Graduate from of an accredited test pilot school (USAF, Navy, French, Empire or National Test Pilot School)
- Previous experience with De Havilland products (i.e., Twin Otter, DHC-8, CL 215/415)
- International operations experience
