We want a talented project leader to develop and manage the development of the Ensembl project’s production infrastructure and associated portfolio of web applications. Our infrastructure is under active redevelopment (https://beta.ensembl.org) and offers an exciting opportunity for you to be at the forefront of its development and release.
The Ensembl project provides access to annotated genomes, genetic variation data, regulation data and comparative genomics from across the tree of life. We are central to efforts around improving human health, understanding species biodiversity, helping to ensure food security and tackling climate change all using genomic data. We collaborate with world class consortium and other EMBL groups to address these challenges. You will be working within the Ensembl team, which is composed of over 70 people including developers, designers, trainers, engineers, annotators and researchers. The Genomics Technology Infrastructure (GTI) team helps to develop a suite of highly valued scientific resources that support biological research worldwide with millions of visitors per year.
The role is primarily an internal facing one but requires prior experience of software development in large teams. If this sounds like a project you would want to be involved with, we cannot wait to hear from you.
Your role
Your primary focus will be the management and coordination of the Ensembl Applications and Production team. Together this team delivers Ensembl data releases and develops new infrastructure to both process and distribute Ensembl and
You have
BSc. (or higher) in Computer Science (or a related field), equivalent qualifications or experience
Line management of 3-6 engineers
Staff supervision and staff development
Project and grant deliverable management
Agile task management
Coordinating the development of novel web interfaces for working with genomic data
Contributing and leading data releases
Service delivery and service maintenance
Developing operating procedures, specifications, and priorities for future work including continual improvement processes
Excellent spoken and written English (C1 minimum)
A desire to build positive productive relationships
You might also have
Experience of working in genomics
Familiarity with the types of data we handle in Ensembl (including but not limited to genome assemblies and annotation) and awareness of the common challenges of working with these data
Familiarity with the Ensembl project or knowledge of other leading biomolecular archives and resources
Experience of agile methodologies
Experience of working in a large scientific project,
especially in the field of genomics
Knowledge of additional technologies in the team such as gRPC, Perl and MongoDB
Experience of managing technical service delivery teams
Experience of creating, presenting and delivering technical strategies
