JOB TITLE: Environmental & Energy Paralegal
FLSA STATUS: Non-Exempt
SCHEDULE: Full-Time; M-F 8:30 - 5:00; 37.5 hours/week
LOCATION: Austin, TX Office (hybrid work environment)
REPORTS TO: Regional Office Administrator

POSITION SUMMARY

The Environmental & Energy Paralegal is a non-exempt, full-time position based in our Austin, TX office. This position is responsible for providing paralegal support to multiple attorneys within our environmental & energy law practice groups. It requires a confident and professional individual with good organizational skills and writing ability. Compensation: At Spencer Fane, we carefully consider a wide range of factors when determining compensation, including your background and experience. These considerations can cause your compensation to vary. We expect the starting hourly pay rate for this role to be between $40.09 - $52.69, and will depend on your skills, qualifications, and experience. We encourage all interested candidates to apply.

QUALIFICATIONS / SKILLS

  • Undergraduate degree and/or paralegal certificate required
  • 3-5 years of experience in a law firm or in-house legal department required
  • Litigation experience is helpful but not required
  • Experience with large matter document review and document production (physical and electronic files)
  • Ability to prioritize and coordinate projects and cases for more than one attorney simultaneously
  • Must cope successfully with demands from attorneys and remain calm under pressure
  • Must possess strong organizational, research, problem solving, and time management skills
  • A self-starter with a willingness to work long hours when needed
  • Must conduct all business in a confidential manner
  • Advanced knowledge in Microsoft Office Suite, including Outlook, Word, PowerPoint and Excel required
  • Strong oral and written communication skills, including keyboarding, required

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Position is generally sedentary in nature; involves sitting most of the time, but may involve the need for inter-office mobility for brief periods of time
  • Ability to occasionally or routinely lift up to 10 – 20 lbs.

  • Ability to see and read PC screens, detect color coding, read fine print, and/or normal type size print

Responsibilities:

  • Communicate professionally, productively, and efficiently with clients, contacts, attorneys, other paralegals, all other Firm workers, and all others.
  • Provide support to our environmental law attorneys with drafting, research, document review/analysis, preparing productions, preparing for hearings, depositions and trials.
  • Review, gather, and organize client documents, including related agency or governmental records
  • Search Internet and/or specific sites to gather information or documents requested by attorneys to make the attorney’s job easier and more efficient.
  • Assist attorneys in identifying experts for use in case defense.
  • Participate in trial preparation and mediations as needed.
  • Research and summarize records, as needed, to assist in data gathering, including organizing of information in databases.
  • As directed or as necessary/desirable, lead or participate in meetings and phone calls using remote participation technology (such as, without limitation, Zoom, Microsoft Teams, etc.).
  • Prepare documents and docket deadlines for meetings, court filings, etc.
  • Follow-up with the attorney to ensure that deadlines are being met.
  • Coordinate meetings, including scheduling, drafting minutes, drafting meeting agendas, and creating meeting packets.
  • Meet with clients and attorneys to execute documents, and work closely with clients, explaining processes to clients and assembling relevant information for attorneys.
  • Check citations, proofread documents, and collect exhibits.
  • Perform general administrative tasks such as mailings, file retrieval, handling service payments, filing emails, etc. as needed.
  • Track and record time to ensure services provided are appropriately charged.
