EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE
BS in Engineering/Technology/Business, an Environmental Specialist must have skills and knowledge in the following areas:
- Knowledge of Environmental Science and Technology.
- Technical and environmental aspects of facility operation.
- A relevant requirement of environmental laws, regulations and related documents.
- Environmental management systems and standards including audit procedures, processes and techniques.

Responsibilities:
JOB PURPOSE
Implements Federal, State, Local, and Corporate environmental programs. Ensures that plant management is kept informed on environmental issues and that the plant is in compliance with applicable environmental laws, rules, and regulations. Insures Environmental Management System (EMS) is effectively implemented and maintained.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Responsible for hazardous waste management activities including: registration, identification, transportation, disposal, internal audits, TSDF audits, SPCC program, and training.
- Responsible for air quality program activities including, permitting, monitoring control devices, and identifying problems/issues with environmental protection systems.
- Responsible for the wastewater compliance program, including coordinating compliance activities such sampling, monitoring and identifying critical issues.
- Responsible for the storm water compliance program, including coordinating compliance activities such sampling, monitoring and identifying critical issues.
- Overall responsibility to assure that the ISO 14001 EMS is effectively implemented and maintained. Acts as EMS Management Representative or designee to ISO 14001 registrar.
- Submits required reports to regulatory agencies (Environmental Protection Agency, Missouri Department of Natural Resources, Department of Transportation, and City of Warrensburg). Maintains all related records and documentation. Interact both verbally and in writing with above listed agencies on a regular basis.
- Maintains current knowledge of regulatory environment through attendance at workshops and seminars and the review of The Code of Federal Regulations, The Federal Register, The Code of State Regulations, Warrensburg City Code, trade publications, and other literature.
- Develops plant manufacturing environmental operating procedures to maintain compliance with laws, rules, and regulations. Recommends course of action and develop procedures for compliance with new and revised laws, rules, and regulations. Formulation and implementation of required waste minimization procedures.
- Evaluates all new and existing pollution control equipment requirements. Develops specifications and recommends improvements and changes as required. Completes and submits environmental permits to regulatory agencies as required.
- Advises plant facility maintenance personnel regarding pollution control and treatment systems and assists in operations and maintenance as required.
- Responsible for ensuring required environmental monitoring and sampling is conducted in compliance with regulatory standards. Coordinates major environmental monitoring projects.
- Researches and documents compliance with customer required environmental specifications.
- Acts as the plant liaison with the local community, regulatory agencies, and other outside agencies involving environmental issues. Facility representative to the Local Emergency Planning Committee as required by the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act. Attends scheduled meetings. Acts as the plant’s primary emergency coordinator.
- Tracks customer battery return program.
