Description:

Department: Parks & Environment (Environmental Regulation & Enforcement)

Salary Range/ Wage Rate: PG T23 $2,953.65 - $3,486.53 bi-weekly

Responsibilities:

  • Monitors consultant air emission stack testing sampling for permitted facilities; assesses test procedures and unusual sampling problems in the field; identifies and addresses operational issues related to climatic factors or industrial operating conditions; reviews and evaluates proposed air emission stack test plans and procedures and subsequent tests; informs consultants and permitted facility staff of sampling and air emission stack testing specifications; provides consultants with technical advice, guidance and recommendations on appropriate procedures and advises on the need for adjustments to address problematic conditions or to discontinue tests; alerts a superior or officer of the more unusual situations.
  • Identifies, defines and measures a variety of stack emissions; performs related analyses and calculations; interprets results and determines if measured contaminants exceed allowable limits; obtains additional samples for confirmation as required; determines and applies special test procedures to resolve difficult or unusual problems observed in the field; recommends new procedures for unusual circumstances.
  • Evaluates and determines appropriate locations and safe and efficient sampling procedures for scheduled and special sampling requests associated with industrial liquid waste for the source control program and for liquid waste characterization studies and research; reviews GIS drawings and works with sewer crews and Environmental Control Officers as needed to identify and set up equipment in suitable locations; develops and carries out sampling process for odorous air contaminants in ambient air.
  • Maintains records of test results and procedures; alerts officers to abnormal reports and violations of requirements; and prepares reports detailing test results for a superior and/or others.
  • Liaises and coordinates with a variety of internal and external contacts on matters related to the work, such as consultants, contractors, staff at permitted facilities, and laboratory staff; delivers samples to laboratories for analysis; follows and documents strict chain of custody protocols during legal sampling work; testifies in legal proceedings as required.
  • Checks, cleans, calibrates and maintains all sampling equipment, performs simple repairs of equipment as necessary, and prepares solutions and reagents required for testing; participates in selection of new equipment and the preparation of related business cases.
  • As required, coordinates the sampling work of contractors and junior staff.
  • Performs related work as required.
