Description:

JOB SUMMARY:

The Environmental Officer will be responsible for ensuring the Water Treatment Plant construction site operates in compliance with environmental regulations and standards. The role involves monitoring environmental practices, conducting site inspections, implementing environmental management plans, and ensuring all activities meet legal requirements. The Environmental Officer will work closely with project teams to promote sustainable practices, minimize environmental impact, and address any environmental concerns promptly.

QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Environmental Science, Environmental Engineering, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 3 – 5 years of relevant experience in environmental management, preferably in construction projects such as water treatment plants or large infrastructure projects.
  • Knowledge of Malaysian environmental regulations, environmental impact assessments (EIA), and environmental management systems (EMS).
  • Familiarity with environmental monitoring tools and techniques (air, water, and noise monitoring).
  • Strong problem-solving skills, with the ability to identify environmental risks and recommend solutions.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to effectively educate and collaborate with site personnel.
  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple environmental tasks in a fast-paced construction environment.

Responsibilities:

  • Environmental Compliance Monitoring: Ensure site activities comply with local environmental laws, regulations, and project-specific environmental management plans.
  • Implement Environmental Management Plans (EMP): Develop, implement, and enforce the project’s environmental management system and ensure that site personnel are adhering to these plans.
  • Conduct Environmental Inspections: Regularly inspect the site to identify potential environmental risks, such as pollution, waste mismanagement, and improper hazardous material handling.
  • Waste Management: Oversee the proper disposal of waste materials, ensuring that the site adheres to sustainable waste management practices, including waste minimization and recycling efforts.
  • Water, Air, and Noise Monitoring: Conduct monitoring of water quality, air emissions, and noise levels to ensure they remain within permissible limits as defined by environmental regulations.
  • Training and Awareness: Provide environmental awareness training and toolbox talks to workers, educating them on good environmental practices, proper waste disposal, and pollution control measures.
  • Incident Response and Investigation: Respond to any environmental incidents, such as spills or leaks, and conduct thorough investigations to identify root causes and recommend corrective actions.
  • Prepare Reports: Maintain accurate and up-to-date records of environmental monitoring, incidents, and inspections. Provide regular reports on the project’s environmental performance to management and relevant authorities.
  • Liaise with Authorities: Act as the main point of contact with local environmental regulatory agencies, ensuring compliance with permits and resolving any environmental issues that arise.
  • Promote Sustainability: Collaborate with project teams to promote sustainable practices and environmentally friendly construction methods.
  • Review Project Plans: Review and provide feedback on project plans and designs to ensure they incorporate sustainable practices and meet environmental guidelines.
  • Emergency Preparedness: Assist in the development of emergency response plans for environmental hazards, such as oil spills or hazardous waste incidents.
