Location: Halifax, NS

We are looking for an Environmental Scientist to join the Environmental Services team. Environmental Services supports all environmental aspects of electricity generation across Nova Scotia Power, including generation and energy delivery. You will liaise with internal departments and external regulatory departments/agencies in providing this support across NSPI.
You will provide expertise on engineering and science related to regulatory environmental approvals and environmental monitoring programs, including support for environmental management systems (EMS) and other environmental programs across Nova Scotia Power Inc.

Key elements of this role include::

  • Supporting the environmental aspects of power production operations, construction, and maintenance activities; including the development and implementation of plans to mitigate and/or minimize the environmental effects of undertakings across NSPI, with particular emphasis on air emissions control and monitoring.
  • Supporting environmental monitoring, studies, and compliance programs undertaken at NSPI facilities.
  • Analyzing data and preparing reports for regulatory departments/agencies such as ECCC, NSECC, Statistics Canada, Industrial Approval Annual reports, Ambient air montoring data reports, Emissions quantification (mercury), Sustainability reporting.
  • Project management and contractor management with a focus on environmental projects
  • Travel within Nova Scotia may be required to support operational sites.
  • Located in Halifax or Sydney, NS.

You will be responsible for your personal safety and that of your co-workers by observing all Occupational Health and Safety Rules and Regulations and the requirements of the Nova Scotia Power Safety Program.

As the ideal candidate you recognize yourself in most of the following competencies, and possess or are working towards the desired skills and experience listed below:

  • Minimum of five years’ experience in the field of Environment.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Science or Engineering.
  • Valid Driver’s License
  • Knowledge and experience with relevant Federal and Provincial environmental legislation, regulations, codes and standard
  • Experience with NPRI, emissions inventories & verification processes, sustainability reporting, environmental management systems
  • Experience working with environmental regulators
  • Knowledge and experience with Environmental Management Systems.
  • Self starter with excellent organizational and analytical skills who is a problem solver and a team player.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills with the ability to clearly communicate outcomes.
