JOB SUMMARY:

The role of the Environmental Specialist is to assist in the creation and implementation of the Treaty, Lands and Resources Department’s Land, Water, and Environmental and Stewardship Program initiatives, and coordinate specific projects pertaining to the lands and waters of the Tsleil-Waututh territory.

The Environmental Specialist is responsible for the following:

• Support and assist the Environmental Programs Manager and Senior Environmental Specialist in a variety of projects
• Coordinate community Shellfish Harvest initiatives and wider shellfish program initiatives
• Coordinate and support habitat restoration projects including kelp and eelgrass
• Support data management and organization
• Provide mapping and data analysis support
• Technical review and support for initiatives and programs
• Engage in relationship-building with other organizations and government bodies

QUALIFICATIONS:

• A post-secondary degree preferred but relevant diploma accepted in sciences or related environmental field, and one years relevant experience.
• Excellent oral and written communication skills with ability to communicate effectively with personnel at all organizational levels.
• Must be computer literate and able to work with programs such as Adobe and Microsoft Office.
• Good organizational skills and attention to detail. Demonstrated ability to manage projects or assignments with minimal supervision.
• Experience working with scientific data and strong analytical skills
• GIS and mapping skills a strong asset
• Experience working in both office and field settings, preferably in a First Nation context.
• Demonstrates flexibility, cooperation, and the adaptability to changing priorities and working independently or as part of a team.
• Knowledge and appreciation of BC indigenous cultures, and ability to work in a dynamic cross-cultural setting.
• Valid driver’s license and access to a vehicle are a strong asset.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Works collaboratively and provides support on TLR projects.
• Accountable for all assigned project deliverables.
• Assists in reporting on activities to satisfy appropriate funding requirements.
• Assists the Consultation and Accommodation Manager with referral and consultation requests including client meetings, relationship building, extensive project review, and responses.
• Assists in researching grant opportunities and developing LWE funding proposals
• Reviews, drafts and edits departmental, program and project reports and documentation as required.
• Assists with the implementation and delivery of other department initiatives as directed.
• Assists with communications and community outreach (internally and externally).
• Assists with fisheries crew field work if needed
• Manages delivery and on-ground logistics of the TWN Shellfish Harvest, the TWN Elk Harvest, and in expanding traditional food programs.
• Assists the implementation and delivery of other Tsleil-Waututh initiatives.
• Assists and supports the planning and implementation of community events.
• Attends related workshops, conferences and First Nation organization forums, as required.
