The Port Hope Area Initiative (PHAI) is a federal initiative to clean up low-level radioactive waste materials situated in the Municipality of Port Hope (MPH) and the Municipality of Clarington. The project involves remediating contaminated sites to establish clean-up criteria (CC) and consolidating the waste materials in a new engineered mound (one in each community). The project is sponsored by Atomic Energy of Canada Limited (AECL), and the project delivery is led by Canadian Nuclear Laboratories (CNL).
The Environmental Assessment (EA) Environmental Technologist Supervisor (‘Supervisor’) works under the direction of the EA Follow-Up Program Lead and the Manager, HWP Environmental Management to implement the field components of the Environmental and Biophysical Monitoring Program throughout Phase 2 and Phase 3 of the PHAI and to verify the predictions of the EA. Also, as a Nuclear Substance license holder from the CNSC, CNL is required to operate Environmental and Effluent Monitoring Programs to verify the systems in place to protect the public and the environment are working as designed.
What will you be doing!

Employee Supervision/Leadership

  • Provides supervision of Historic Waste Program Management Office (HWP MO) EA Follow-Up Program staff and Co-op students (as applicable). This includes work planning and scheduling, ensuring training requirements are met, setting expectations, performance management and assisting in recruiting and onboarding.
  • Provides instruction, coaching, feedback and direction to assigned staff.
  • Contributes to the formal and informal performance evaluations.
  • Addresses performance concerns and incidents of non-compliance.
  • Escalates staff issues to the EA Follow-Up Program Lead and/or the Manager, HWP Environmental Management.

    Environmental Monitoring & Reporting

  • Supervising all aspects of environmental sampling in support of the Environmental and Biophysical Monitoring Plan, the Environmental Management and Protection Plan, and other PHAI project support activities.

  • Entering the field with staff to collect field measurements using a variety of instrumentation, such as noise meters and water quality meters. Maintaining accurate/complete records in accordance with prescribed processes and plans.
  • The collection, tracking, preparation and analysis of samples for radiological and non-radiological parameters by off-site laboratories. Coordinating the shipment of samples to and from contract laboratories.
  • Perform laboratory work with no supervision; supervise employees and ensure they are trained to properly complete laboratory work.
  • Ensuring external contracts are in place for the equipment and calibration services needed to properly implement the field program on an annual basis.
  • Assist with data analysis to ensure that issues are properly managed and elevated in a timely.
  • Ensuring the continuation of a high-quality monitoring program, using adaptive management as required.
  • Reviewing/preparing environmental documentation such as Statements of Work (SOWs) or new monitoring procedures, as required.
  • Inspecting incoming shipments from suppliers (consumables and equipment).
  • Maintaining the inventory of equipment and consumables
  • Other duties as assigned by your manager.

What we are looking for:

ABILITIES AND SKILLS:

  • A valid Ontario class “G” (or equivalent) driver’s license.
  • A valid Pleasure Craft Operator card.
  • A minimum of three (3) years experience in environmental field work and sample collection techniques, including air, noise, groundwater, surface water, sediment and soil. Other work experiences should include installation, calibration, and maintenance of sampling equipment.
  • The ability to work effectively, manage conflicting priorities, and maintain good working relationships with team members.
  • Experience managing a team of people effectively.
  • Well-developed communication, and interpersonal (reading/writing/oral, internal/external); decision making and/or reasoning; strategic/critical thinking; problem solving; project management skills.
  • The ability to lead staff with confidence and ensure that priorities are being met to meet the regulatory requirements of the project.

JOB/INDUSTRY-SPECIFIC KNOWLEDGE:

  • Field-based environmental monitoring focused on air, noise, surface water, groundwater, soil and sediment sampling. Other work experiences should include installation, calibration, and maintenance of sampling equipment.
  • Other outdoor skills and experiences such as operation of GPS systems and knowledge of maps, operation of other equipment such as hand held tools.
  • Chain of custody processes for sample management.

Experience:

  • With a degree: 3 years of relevant environmental management experience with at least one (1) year of effective leadership and/or supervisory experience with demonstrated effective team leadership, team-building, and conflict resolution skills
  • With a diploma: 3 to 5 years of relevant environmental management experience with at least two (2) years of leadership and/or supervisory experience with demonstrated effective team leadership, team-building, and conflict resolution skills

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Familiarity with the Port Hope and Port Granby Projects.
  • Strong familiarity with multi-disciplinary environmental investigations, and good familiarity with construction and/or engineering project work.
  • Multi-tasking, organizing priorities, and managing time to meet deadlines.
  • Adaptive, able to respond to changing conditions quickly.
  • Questioning attitude. Logical thinking. Detail-oriented, accurate.
  • Demonstrated personal accountability.

Education:

  • A degree from a recognized institute of environmental, geography, science, or its equivalent in experience, additional education and/or recognized training.

    -OR-

  • A diploma from a recognized institute of environmental, geography, science, or its equivalent in experience, additional education and/or recognized training.

Security clearance eligibility required:
Reliability Status with Site Access Security Clearance (SASC), which has a minimum requirement of 3 years of verifiable history in Canada, Australia, New Zealand, the United States and/or the United Kingdom.
