THE OPPORTUNITY:

The successful candidate will provide technical support and services primarily to the Institute of Nano and Micro Systems (IMNS) through the Scottish Microelectronics Centre (SMC), one of the School’s small research facilities.
This role is Grade UE06 or UE07 and is available on an open-ended (permanent) basis. The level of appointment for this Technician/Technical Support Officer post will be determined by the selection panel on the basis of the experience of the successful candidate.
The School of Engineering is seeking to appoint an experienced cleanroom technical staff member to join its skilled Technical Services team of over 40 technical staff. The successful candidate will primarily support the Institute of Micro- & Nano- Systems (IMNS) via the SMC. The post-holder will contribute to the safe and efficient running of the labs, including through routine servicing and maintenance of equipment, health and safety implementation within the labs, and the transfer of knowledge and practical skills to undergraduate and postgraduate students as well as staff (including, technicians and modern apprentices).
Additionally, the Technical Support Officer role will manage and supervise delivery of the technical support and services for research, teaching and commercial activities across the School’s cleanroom facilities, including line management responsibility for a small team of technical staff (currently 2).
The School’s SMC small research facility supports the work of numerous academic and research staff and students in the School, as well as commercial clients. Experience of working in a higher education environment would therefore be useful in this role. The successful candidate should also demonstrate excellent health and safety awareness and familiarity with health and safety documentation and systems (e.g., risk assessments, COSHH etc). It is essential that the successful applicant has semiconductor/microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) process and technologies which may include lithography, electroplating, SEM and vacuum systems, and should be eager to learn new techniques and equipment. An interest in knowledge transfer and the Continuous Professional Development of themselves and others would also be beneficial.
With extensive work experience in a similar work environment (e.g., cleanroom) and with relevant engineering qualifications (e.g., HNC/HND), the post holder will have proven technical abilities. A varied skillset is desirable which might include some of the following: sub-micron lithography, high vacuum systems, RF power supplies, complex gas distribution systems, DI water generation, high temperature furnaces, plasma-based systems, microprocessor controlled systems.

This role is full-time, open-ended and available immediately.
