FIELD(S) OF ACTIVITY/RESEARCH FOR THE TRAINEESHIP
Are you passionate about space technology and eager to contribute to cutting-edge advancements in data handling architectures? The European Space Agency (ESA) is looking for a talented and motivated student to join our team as Graduate Trainee in the On-Board Computer and Data Handling section. This is a unique opportunity to work on the Advanced Data Handling Architecture (ADHA) and gain hands-on experience in a dynamic and innovative environment.
The Advanced Data Handling Architecture is our initiative to standardize payload and platform data handling equipment on board future ESA spacecraft. This effort will enable the construction of units such as On-Board Computers and Solid-State Mass Memories from standardized modules that adhere to a common backplane specification with standardized electrical interfaces and protocols, much like the commercial computers we use at home. Many prominent European companies are involved in the development of this new architecture, and we at ESA coordinate these efforts while building our own capabilities in design and validation at the ADHA lab facility at ESA-ESTEC.
About the Position:
As a trainee in the On-Board Computer and Data Handling section, you will have the exciting opportunity to help us establish the new ADHA lab facility. While the European industry is developing several ADHA modules, we are building a facility to demonstrate new ADHA concepts and test existing modules. This position is perfect for young hands-on engineers with hardware (PCB design and FPGAs) or software (test software and embedded software) skills. With this trainee position, you will enhance your knowledge about typical data handling and processing technologies used in space, learn more about the processes at ESA, and gain a deeper understanding of the European space industry.
Key Responsibilities:
- Assist in the design and development of ADHA test modules. This may include PCB design, FPGA design, or embedded software design.
- Participate in testing and validation activities. This may include writing software and scripts (e.g. in C++ and Python) for our test platform.
- Collaborate with team members to solve technical challenges.
- Contribute to the documentation and reporting of project progress, e.g. in form of user manuals and GIT repositories.
EDUCATION
You should have just completed, or be in the final year of your master’ s degree in Electronics, Electrical Engineering, or Computer Science.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS
You should have good interpersonal and communication skills and should be able to work in a multicultural environment, both independently and as part of a team. Previous experience of working in international teams can be considered an asset. Your motivation, overall professional perspective and career goals will also be explored during the later stages of the selection process.
