Description:
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:
- A BS degree and a minimum of 8 years of progressive experience in communications-related positions.
- Self-motivated and self-directed while integrating direction and preferences from clients into the execution of all tasks.
- Excellent written and oral communications skills as well as excellent interpersonal skills.
- Proficiency in web content management systems, digital analytics, word-processing and presentation software, and social media.
- Experience working with senior leaders or executives and the confidence to fulfill urgent requests in a timely and professional manner.
- Ability to prioritize tasks and meet deadlines in a deadline-driven environment.
- Ability to work both independently and with all levels of staff in a team-based environment.
- Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to develop and implement solutions.
- Creativity, attention to detail, and a desire to collaborate.
- Ability to balance multiple demands and perform professionally and capably under pressure.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Ability to develop, update, and maintain informative and compelling website content, adhering to a consistent schedule to keep information fresh and encourage return visits. Strategically analyze and report site metrics, and benchmark laboratory and industry best practices to maximize site and content effectiveness for relevant audiences.
- Ability to organize and analyze information from various scientific and often highly technical sources, including interviews with subject matter experts and review of published scientific papers, to produce content in concise and approachable language without loss of technical meaning.
- Ability to support communications projects from concept to completion within deadlines and in collaboration with other team members.
- Excellent scientific/technical reading, writing, and editing skills.
- Experience with WordPress, Drupal and SharePoint content management systems.
- Experience with email marketing platforms such as MailChimp, Emma, or Constant Contact.
- Experience planning, coordinating, and implementing effective communications campaigns.
- Previous experience with DOE and the National Laboratory System.
- Previous experience in science writing.
Responsibilities:
- Work closely with colleagues in the Executive Communications Office to provide responsive and strategic support to the Office of the Laboratory Director.
- Directly support ORNL’s Deputy for Science and Technology with content creation such as newsletters, presentations, and articles.
- Collaborate with other communications professionals, including artists, videographers, and technical editors, to create compelling products that support the Deputy for Science and Technology’s messages and initiatives.
- Coordinate communications projects related to lab-wide research initiatives in support of the Office of the Laboratory Director and the Communications and Community Engagement Directorate.
- Develop an understanding of the laboratory’s mission and stakeholder audiences.
- Work closely with the Executive Communications Manager to strategically develop the executive communications function at ORNL.
- Strengthen internal and external branding through consistent messaging across platforms and by applying ORNL styles/standards to internal and external communications products.
