What you’ll be doing
This is an opportunity to help shape the future of our defined benefit pension investment strategy. Our principle CIBC Pension Plan has $10B of gross assets under management that are allocated to a combination of a liability matching portfolio to mitigate and contain risk within manageable limits, and a growth portfolio to generate sustainable superior risk-adjusted investment over the long term.
Under the guidance of the Chief Investment Officer (CIO), the Executive Director will be responsible for:
- Total Portfolio Management (TPM) – Designing, implementing, and managing the investment strategy and portfolio construction process for the CIBC Pension Plan (Plan).
- Investment Analytics – Providing both leadership and technical hands on support to operationalize analytical, modelling, and performance monitoring capabilities to support the TPM function, as well as front-office risk management capabilities including but not limited to investment and liquidity risks, at both the total portfolio and asset class levels, understanding and quantifying pension liability risks, monitoring overall Plan leverage, and ensuring adequate high-quality liquid asset (HQLA) are available for collateral management.
At CIBC we enable the work environment most optimal for you to thrive in your role. You’ll have the flexibility to manage your work activities within a hybrid work arrangement where you’ll spend 1-3 days per week on-site, while other days will be remote.
How you’ll succeed
- Strategy & Portfolio Construction- Provide a holistic lens across the total Plan to develop and recommend asset mix allocations to the CIO that provide engineered outcomes based on competing objectives and constraints (return, risk, liquidity, and cash needs). Lead strategic ALM studies with a combination of quantitative modeling, scenario analysis and qualitative assessment; also provide the CIO with ad-hoc analysis on potential asset mix changes and tactical tilts.
- Analytics- Be a hands on subject matter expert who excels as an individual contributor to direct the employment of data methods, visualization and analytics to develop dashboards and reports that identify and monitor key risk indicators, performance trends, and support the CIOs strategic and tactical investment decision making.
- Accountability- With overall accountability for timely and accurate end-to-end performance monitoring, modelling, and analytics this role requires someone who has attention to detail, is results oriented, and can communicate results effectively with senior stakeholders.
- Strategic Focus – Understanding how analytical work supports strategic and tactical decision making is critical as part of the Total Portfolio Management role.
Who you are
- You have demonstrated experience. Minimum of 10-15 years of experience within a large pension plan, endowment, investment/actuarial consultancy, or asset manager. Undergraduate degree in business, actuarial science, finance, accounting or the equivalent combination of education and experience. CFA, actuarial, or other relevant designations.
- You are confident in your knowledge. Expert knowledge of capital markets and public asset classes including liquid alternatives. Proven capabilities in running analytical functions. Comprehensive understanding of pension plan and/or institutional investing.
- You have well developed stakeholder management. Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Good organizational and time management skills to deal effectively with multiple time demands in very tight timelines.
- You put our clients and partners first. You engage with purpose to find the right solutions. You go the extra mile because it’s the right thing to do.
- You understand that success is in the details. You notice things that others don’t. Your critical thinking skills help to inform your decision making.
- Values matter to you. You bring your real self to work, and you live our values – trust, teamwork, and accountability.
