We are Europe’s flagship research laboratory for the life sciences – an intergovernmental organisation performing scientific research in disciplines including molecular biology, physics, chemistry and computer science. We are an international, innovative and interdisciplinary laboratory with approx. 2 000 employees from many nations, operating across six sites, in Heidelberg, Barcelona, Hinxton near Cambridge, Hamburg, Grenoble and Rome. Our mission at the Science Education and Public Engagement (SEPE) is to bridge science and schools and to support EMBL’s external engagement programme featuring the scientific work at EMBL. SEPE is part of EMBL’s International Centre for Advanced Training (EICAT). As part of EMBL’s commitment to science education and public engagement, the Laboratory opened a new permanent exhibition ‘The World of Molecular Biology (WMB)’ on its Heidelberg campus in early 2023. The exhibition is open to the public through guided tours in German and English. It also offers guided tours and educational courses for schools. To implement our science education and public engagement programme with ‘The World of Molecular Biology’ exhibition, we are looking for an enthusiastic, highly motivated Education and Exhibition Officer to join us at the EMBL in Heidelberg. The Education and Exhibition Officer will report to the Exhibition Manager and will work closely with other members of the SEPE team.
Your role
• Coordinate the organisation of school visits to the ´The World of Molecular Biology’ exhibition • Develop and deliver guided-tours and workshops for school classes in English and in German • Deliver guided-tours for the public and other visitor groups in German and English • Work closely with scientists across the organisation to develop and revise scientific content for the WMB • Liaise with teachers, schools and out-of-school groups • Support the training of EMBL staff for outreach activities • Communicate and promote the exhibition programme via external and internal media channels • Organise meetings, prepare presentations and reports, update web content • Support EMBL’s portfolio of Science Education and Public Engagement activities.

You have
• A degree in education/didactics/museum education, a qualification as teacher, or equivalent work experience in a formal or informal educational/museum setting • At least 2 years of work experience in formal education (e.g. school) or informal education (e.g. science centre, museum, etc.) • Ability to understand and work with scientific concepts and cutting-edge life sciences research topics • Experience in working with schools, young learners, teachers and the public • Native or near-native German language skills • Excellent command of written and spoken English.
You might also have
• A science degree • Experience in running guided tours and working with interactive media exhibits • Experience in e-learning and blended learning, online exhibitions or co-creative content development • A track record of science communication activities, including the production of high-quality written content • Understanding of the German school science curriculum and informal STEM learning landscape
