Description:

REPORTING

Reporting directly to the President, Vice-Chancellor, Dean and CEO, and in continuous collaboration with educational leadership within the Undergraduate Medical Education (UME) and Postgraduate Medical Education (PGME) portfolios, and in partnership with clinical faculty across all educational disciplines at NOSM University (NOSM U), the Expansion Clinical Lead will ensure a comprehensive approach and effective implementation of NOSM University’s expansion plans within the communities we serve. This individual will play a leadership role in the expansion and/or development of new clinical training sites (i.e. UME Clerkship, and PGME training). The Clinical Lead on expansion will serve as an active member of NOSM University’s Task Force on Expansion and will liaise with the Northern Ontario Academic Medicine Association (NOAMA) and the Physician Clinical Teachers’ Association (PCTA), Section Chairs and Regional sites.

EDUCATION

  • Doctor of Medicine degree
  • Possession of a current license to practice medicine in the province of Ontario
  • A current faculty appointment (or eligibility for same) with NOSM U

LEADERSHIP SKILLS AND ATTRIBUTES

  • Knowledgeable of medical education at both the UME and PGME levels and within the context in which it is situated in the academic (university) and practice (hospital/community-based) environments.
  • Skilled in understanding the complexities faced in implementing educational reform recognizing the differing perspectives and needs of the Associate Deans of Medicine, Chairs, Program Directors, Site Directors, learners, patients, regulatory health authorities, governments and other health providers including clinical medicine preceptors/supervisors.
  • Experienced in faculty development processes ideally with proven record within a leadership or facilitative role.
  • Skilled listener, facilitator and communicator, able to synthesize differing perspectives and respected for their abilities to find solutions that create opportunities with buy-in from different stakeholders.
  • Invested in the success of NOSM U and in acting in a liaison role to support and lead change to support the success of this “once in a generation” expansion opportunity.
  • Experience in using multi-method quantitative and qualitative research methodologies with a working knowledge of how to interpret and synthesize surveys and interview data.
  • Good written and oral communication skills.
  • Does not hold any perceived or real conflict of interest that would influence the work being tasked to do.

Responsibilities:

  • Participate in and contribute to key expansion committees such as, but not limited to: NOSM University’s Expansion Task Force, the Family Medicine Steering Committee, and other relevant committees including the Senate (as an observer) UMECC and PGMEC.
  • Participate in and contribute to in-person engagement sessions and/or virtual meetings in key communities as requested to support the expansion discussions.
  • Work with the NOSM U Continuing Education Professional Development (CEPD) portfolio to create and deliver appropriate faculty development sessions to support expansion needs.
  • Engage with Local Education Group (LEG) leads and administrators as well as community faculty and other interested parties to better understand local needs to support expansion.
  • In conjunction with key NOSM University administrative leadership, undertake a critical mapping of current teaching capacity within our various community teaching sites.
  • Report regularly to the ETF, NOAMA Leadership, PCTA Executive, Section Chairs (through the DH CSD) and as needed to Units, hospitals and sites.
  • Report on Progress to the ETF at every meeting.
