Description:

As parents, you’ve probably noticed that the world your children are stepping into after school is quite different from the one you experienced. The options available to them now are much broader, and in many ways, more flexible, allowing them to find a path that truly suits their interests and strengths.
Here, Kids First’s experienced Wise Choices Careers Advisors share the pathways that are available for young people when they leave high school in Australia these days.
University Education
University is still a popular choice for many young people, but going to uni is not just about getting an ATAR anymore.
Early entry programs have opened doors for students who’ve shown consistent effort and achievement throughout Year 11, sometimes securing a spot at university before they’ve even finished Year 12. This can take a lot of pressure off during that final year. Plus, with options to study online or part-time, university is more accessible than ever, fitting around other commitments they might have.

There are many opportunities available in Australia, and each university has its own approach. Here are a couple of examples:

  • UNIVERSITY OF SYDNEY – EARLY OFFER YEAR 12 (E12) SCHEME:This program provides early offers to students based on their Year 11 results, community involvement, and other criteria, allowing them to secure a place before the final Year 12 exams.
  • UTS – WOMEN IN ENGINEERING AND IT (WIEIT) COOPERATIVE SCHOLARSHIP:A program specifically aimed at encouraging young women to pursue careers in engineering and IT, offering both financial support and industry placements.

Vocational Education and Training (VET)
Vocational education has come a long way and is now a respected pathway that can lead directly into a fulfilling career. Whether it’s through TAFE or other training organisations, students can gain practical skills that employers are looking for. With courses ranging from certificates to diplomas, and the opportunity to learn both online and on the job, this pathway can be a great fit for those who prefer hands-on learning.

Here are a couple of examples of what’s available:

  • TAFE NSW – SMART AND SKILLED PROGRAM:Provides fee-free or subsidised courses in a wide range of industries, helping students gain the qualifications they need for employment in sectors like healthcare, construction, and hospitality.
  • AUSTRALIAN APPRENTICESHIPS PATHWAYS (AAP) – APPRENTICESHIP PROGRAM:Offers a combination of paid work and training across various trades and industries, allowing students to gain practical skills while earning a qualification.

Employment
Many young people are keen to jump straight into the workforce, and there’s plenty of support for that too. Apprenticeships and traineeships allow them to earn while they learn, often leading straight into full-time roles. Even starting with a casual job while they’re still in school can provide invaluable experience and help them build confidence in the workplace.

There are various programs that support this pathway:

  • COLES SUPERMARKETS – RETAIL LEADERS PROGRAM:A structured development program that provides young people with the opportunity to start in an entry-level role and progress into management positions within the company.
  • MCDONALD’S AUSTRALIA – MACCA’S TRAINEESHIPS:Offers nationally recognised qualifications in retail, hospitality, and business management, all while earning a wage and gaining real-world experience.

Gap Year
Taking a gap year is more than just a break – it can be a fantastic opportunity for growth. Whether they choose to travel, volunteer, or work, this time can help them gain life experience, develop new skills, and clarify what they really want to pursue next.

Here are some gap year opportunities that could be worth exploring:

  • LATTITUDE GLOBAL VOLUNTEERING – GAP YEAR PROGRAMS:Offers young Australians the chance to volunteer overseas in countries like the UK, Canada, and Japan, working in schools, community projects, and healthcare settings.
  • LETZ LIVE – WORKING HOLIDAY PROGRAMS:Provides opportunities for young people to work abroad, particularly in the UK and New Zealand, often in roles such as school assistants or camp leaders.

Defence Force
The Australian Defence Force offers structured training and education alongside a career in service. It’s not just about military roles – there are opportunities in areas like engineering, healthcare, and IT, with education and career development built into their time in the Defence Force.

For those interested in this pathway, here are a couple of programs to consider:

  • ADF GAP YEAR PROGRAM:Offers a 12-month experience in the Army, Navy, or Air Force, where young people can gain skills, leadership training, and an introduction to military life without a long-term commitment.
  • AUSTRALIAN DEFENCE FORCE ACADEMY (ADFA):Allows students to study for a degree through the University of New South Wales while undergoing military training, with guaranteed employment in the ADF upon graduation.

Entrepreneurship
For those with a business idea or a knack for creativity, starting a small business or freelancing can be a rewarding path. There’s a growing culture of entrepreneurship among young Australians, supported by online resources, grants, and incubator programs that can help them turn their ideas into reality.

Here are a couple of examples of programs that support young entrepreneurs:

  • YOUNG ENTREPRENEURS PROGRAM (YEP) AUSTRALIA:A government-supported initiative that provides mentoring, workshops, and funding opportunities for young Australians looking to start their own businesses.
  • FISHBURNERS – STARTUP COMMUNITY MEMBERSHIP:Offers young entrepreneurs access to co-working spaces, mentorship, and networking opportunities to help them launch and grow their businesses.

Online Learning
The internet has opened up a world of learning opportunities. Whether they’re interested in picking up a new skill or earning a certification, platforms like Coursera or Udemy offer courses from universities and experts worldwide. It’s a flexible way to learn, and they can do it all from the comfort of home.

Here are a couple of popular online learning opportunities:

  • COURSERA – GOOGLE IT SUPPORT PROFESSIONAL CERTIFICATE:An online course that provides foundational skills in IT support, with the possibility of job placement assistance upon completion.
  • OPEN UNIVERSITIES AUSTRALIA – SINGLE SUBJECT STUDY:Allows students to enrol in individual subjects from universities across Australia, giving them the flexibility to learn at their own pace and explore different fields of study.

Further Schooling
For some, an extra year at school or attending a specialised program might be the best way to build confidence and skills before making a big decision. There are alternative education options that offer a more personalised approach, which can make all the difference.

Here are a couple of examples of further schooling options:

  • YEAR 13 – FURTHER LEARNING PATHWAYS:Provides information and resources for students considering an extra year of schooling or alternative education pathways, including transition programs and study options.
  • BIG PICTURE EDUCATION AUSTRALIA:An alternative schooling program that tailors education to each student’s interests and needs, offering personalised learning plans and real-world learning experiences.

Creative and Performing Arts
If your child has a passion for the arts, there are now more pathways than ever to turn that into a career. Whether through formal education at an art school or building a portfolio independently, there are plenty of opportunities to showcase and monetise their work online.

Here are a couple of examples of programs in this field:

  • NATIONAL INSTITUTE OF DRAMATIC ART (NIDA) – BACHELOR OF FINE ARTS:Offers specialised programs in acting, design, and technical production, preparing students for careers in the performing arts industry.
  • AUSTRALIAN FILM TELEVISION AND RADIO SCHOOL (AFTRS) – BACHELOR OF ARTS (SCREEN):A degree program focused on the creative and technical skills required for careers in film, television, and digital media.

Community and Social Services
Volunteering or getting involved in youth work can be incredibly rewarding and provide valuable experience, especially for those considering careers in social work, education, or healthcare. It’s also a great way to give back to the community and make a positive impact.

Here are a couple of ways young people can get involved:

  • Australian Volunteers Program – Youth Ambassador Program: Enables young Australians to volunteer in overseas community projects, gaining valuable experience in social work, education, and healthcare.
  • YOUTH OFF THE STREETS – VOLUNTEERING OPPORTUNITIES:Offers roles for young people to volunteer in various community programs aimed at supporting disadvantaged youth across Australia.

Industry-Specific Training
If your child already has a clear idea of what they want to do, industry-specific training through Registered Training Organisations can be a direct pathway into their chosen field. These programs are often developed in collaboration with employers, ensuring they’re job-ready by the time they finish.

Here are a couple of examples of industry-specific training programs:

  • MEGT – AUSTRALIAN APPRENTICESHIPS:Provides apprenticeship and traineeship opportunities in industries such as construction, healthcare, and business, with on-the-job training and nationally recognised qualifications.
  • WILLIAM ANGLISS INSTITUTE – HOSPITALITY AND CULINARY ARTS COURSES:Specialises in training for the hospitality industry, offering certificates, diplomas, and degrees in areas like cookery, patisserie, and event management.

Government Support and Scholarships
There are many government programs and scholarships designed to support young people in their education and career journeys. Financial assistance can make all the difference, helping to reduce the barriers to pursuing their dreams.

Here are a couple of options for financial support:

  • YOUTH ALLOWANCE:A government payment that supports students and job seekers aged 16-24 while they study, train, or look for work.
  • RURAL AND REGIONAL ENTERPRISE SCHOLARSHIPS (RRES):Provides financial support to students from rural and regional areas to study in fields such as science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).

Indigenous Pathways
For Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students, there are programs specifically designed to provide culturally inclusive education and leadership opportunities. These pathways recognise the unique strengths and needs of Indigenous young people, offering tailored support to help them succeed.

Here are a couple of programs that support Indigenous students:

  • AURORA EDUCATION FOUNDATION – INDIGENOUS SCHOLARSHIPS PORTAL:A comprehensive resource for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students to find scholarships and financial support for education.
