PROGRAM DESCRIPTION:

Cape Breton Medical Campus (CBMC) is one of the three campuses of Dalhousie Faculty of Medicine. The main administrative office is located on the CBU Campus in Sydney. CBMC offers a continuum of education programming for up to 30 students per year over the 4-year undergraduate program. In addition, postgraduate residency training programs will be developed, and additional core clinical rotations will be provided through the postgraduate training programs based in Halifax and other areas of rural Nova Scotia. Clinical teaching is provided by more than 650 faculty distributed throughout the clinical teaching sites and supported by local staff and academic leadership in Nova Scotia Health regional facilities. A partner in the Nova Scotia Health Innovation Hub, Cape Breton is a developing leader in rural clinical trials capacity building. The Centre of Excellence for Healthy Aging is dedicated to programs and research that translates into improved care for older adults in rural Nova Scotia. Continuing professional development is provided to all faculty regardless of geography

JOB SUMMARY:

Reporting to the Program Director and working under the direction of the Director of Faculty Development CBMC the Faculty Development and Engagement Manager will provide leadership to advance the goals of medical education in the area of faculty development, program development, faculty engagement, and education research and faculty communication. The incumbent will ensure the administration, implementation and evaluation of faculty development workshops and programs, and develop teaching and workshop materials. The incumbent will consult with faculty regarding teaching methodology, and develop new instructional and evaluation approaches and strategies to meet faculty needs. The Manager will be integral to the program’s delivery and success and will work collaboratively with the Faculty Development team at DMNS

QUALIFICATIONS & SKILLS:

  • Master’s degree in Adult Education or equivalent is required
  • A minimum of 5 years of progressive experience in a related field such as adult education/teaching, educational technology, health education and distributed education in higher education and teaching.
  • Knowledge and experience in medical education programs and/or academic health care environments would be considered an asset.
  • Must have demonstrated knowledge of and an ability to apply principles and best practices pertaining to proven designs and implementations of faculty development programs
  • The incumbent must have the ability to work in a fast-paced team-based collaborative environment, and must demonstrate enthusiasm, advocacy, and care for student and faculty learning.
  • The incumbent is required to actively participate in supplemental study to maintain their level of expertise and engage in ongoing continuing education in order to respond to the demands of the position.
  • Must have the ability to build and maintain a wide array of internal and external contacts for the planning, development, and execution of this position’s duties.
  • The incumbent is expected to work independently with minimal supervision, to be self-directive, and to assume initiative and accountability in all aspects of their work.
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to organize and prioritize workloads, as well as the ability to work independently and multi-task in a deadline driven, team environment

Responsibilities:

PURPOSE OF CAMPUS:

Dalhousie University and Cape Breton University entered into a partnership in 2022 to establish the Cape Breton Medical Campus in Sydney, NS, with a goal of admitting the first cohort of learners in 2025. Together, the institutions share the goal of enhancing their contribution to Nova Scotia’s evolving health reform agenda by:

  • increasing the number of family physician specialists and, eventually, Royal College specialist physicians serving communities in rural Nova Scotia;
  • training physicians with exceptional skills and cultural competencies in the areas of family medicine, rural family medicine, rural practice, and L’nu health;
  • advancing healthy communities through promotion of a preventative and collaborative care model that enables equitable access across the full continuum of care;
  • creating opportunities for interprofessional education between physicians, nurses, nurse practitioners, social workers, public health professionals, and other healthcare professionals to meet the current and future needs of communities in rural Nova Scotia;
  • improving health outcomes in rural communities and across Nova Scotia health zones, through interdisciplinary research, particularly in the areas of aging, frailty, and other diseases prevalent in rural communities (such as cancer and diabetes), as well as Indigenous health and African Nova Scotian health;
  • mobilizing inspired, passionate physician leaders to increase training capacity in Cape Breton and rural Nova Scotia; and
  • advocating for family physicians and the health care system as a whole.

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES:

This role is an integral part of the Medical Campus and is made to be available to all teaching faculty. Faculty development and program design and delivery is designed to respect and reflect the program’s principle of interprofessional collaborative approach to health care delivery.

Faculty Development

  • Develop and maintain rapport with faculty to foster and maintain engagement
  • Identify and provide local faculty with support and training for professional development and/or preparation for delivery of core curricular elements.
  • Identify, establish and maintain a functional method of communication with CBMC faculty to ensure an effective flow of information to and from Faculty
  • Communicate and work collaboratively with the Faculty development Managers at Dalhousie’s other medical campuses (DMNS and DMNB) to ensure a unilateral approach of communication and support to all faculty
  • Identify, develop, deliver and evaluate faculty education programs covering technical, instructional design, and pedagogical aspects of teaching with the use of information management and technology.
  • Develop a measurable strategic approach for faculty development priorities.
  • Identify, assess and develop opportunities to provide faculty development programs (recruit workshop leaders, design and develop workshop material and handouts)
  • Lead and/or assist with relevant workshops, presentations and seminars.
  • Develop, implement and analyze assessment instruments to evaluate programs.
  • Design and create needs assessment and evaluation tools.
  • Ensure programs are accredited and maintain activity and attendance records.
  • Conduct annual survey of Nova Scotia physicians to inventory areas of interest in the program including curricular and non-curricular components.

Program Design and Delivery

  • Design and facilitate faculty development programming.
  • Develop comprehensive faculty development programs tailored to enhance teaching effectiveness and academic leadership.
  • Conduct needs assessments to identify areas for faculty growth and improvement.
  • Create interactive workshops, seminars, and training sessions on various pedagogical and professional topics.
  • Collaborate with faculty members to design customized development plans that align with institutional goals and individual career aspirations.
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of development programs through feedback surveys and performance metrics, making continuous improvements based on data-driven insights.
  • Foster a supportive learning environment that encourages collaboration, reflection, and the sharing of best practices among faculty.
  • Create templates and designs for course development and delivery.
  • Collaborate with content experts on effective program design and methodology.
  • Edit online content ensuring content is current and easily accessible.
  • Provide instructional support to faculty and learners in the use of Web technology.
  • Seek external programming opportunities to grow local faculty resources.
