THE OPPORTUNITY

We are currently looking for self-directed, engaging, empathetic, Family Strengthening Worker to support our Youth and Family Programs. Reporting to the Youth and Family Coordinator, this position will provide short term interventions to youth and families where child protection concerns have been identified by the Ministry of Children and Family Development.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Education and Knowledge
  • Bachelor’s degree in human/social services or related field
  1. Training and Experience
  • One (1) years recent related experience
  • Or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience
  • Direct service delivery experience in community social services sector with a demonstrated knowledge of community based programs and related provincial and community support systems is preferred.
  • Current First Aid Certification required.
  1. Skills and Abilities
  • Solid professional written and verbal communication skills.
  • Demonstrated organizational and time management skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with clients and colleagues with a commitment to team approach.
  • Ability to deal effectively with conflict and crisis.
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision.
  1. Other Information
  • Able to work within a flexible work schedule including some evenings and possibly weekends.
  • Must possess a valid BC Class 5 Drivers’ License, have a reliable vehicle, business insurance, and drivers abstract review (mileage paid for work use)

Responsibilities:

  1. Gathers information relevant to the client’s strengths, needs and risks by interviewing, observing behavior, meeting with caregivers and service providers and using a variety of inventories, checklists, and questionnaires. Assess the information gathered to identify client strengths, needs, and risks. Develops and implements an intervention plan within program guidelines.
  2. Provides support, guidance, and problem solving to clients to address issues related to family functioning in an individual or family setting using techniques such as active listening, conflict resolution, mediation, and negotiation through a strength based approach that will resolve protection issues utilizing best-practice psycho-education methods. May provide follow up to services to youth and family.
  3. Provides referral, support, guidance and problem solving to clients to address issues related to youth and family functioning as required.
  4. Assist the youth and family to remain intact and address child protection concerns in a less invasive environment than an investigation.
  5. Provide intervention and support to families in collaboration with MCFD social worker with a possible one month extension
  6. Provide culturally competent services to families.
  7. Maintains close links with schools, police, restorative justice programs and mental health and other service providers as required.
  8. May participate in the development, modification, and evaluation of client service plans with the CARE team. Participates in CARE team meetings on interim basis to report client’s activities and progress.
  9. Provides skill building to clients on issues such as parenting- teen interaction, adolescent development, discipline and guidance, and behavior management.
  10. May plan and facilitate adolescent, individual, or group sessions on topics related to family functioning/or skill set.
  11. Liaises with and/or promotes the interests of clients with other community service providers, professionals and school personnel as required. Accompanies clients to meetings and appointments as required.
  12. Maintains related records and statistics and provides reports to the supervisor and MCFD.
  13. Performs other related duties as required.
