Description:
The role of the Fetal Medicine Specialist Midwife is to co-ordinate the continuity of care and support of women (their partners and families) during screening for/diagnosis of fetal anomaly and/or high-risk pregnancy.
- To ensure communication and information sharing systems supports access to high quality consultation between professionals and referral from one level of care to another as appropriate.
- Communicate information in a way that makes it relevant and understandable for women and their families.
- Establish methods to recording activity, monitoring success of maternal and fetal medicine interventions and informing other health professionals and commissioners.
- Present findings at local and wider maternity forums on trends and outcomes and potential service requirements for this group.
- Liaise with local and regional fetal medicine consultants and other specialist services including genetics, cardiology, oral-facial, paediatricians and blood transfusion services.
- Enable transfers between services (internal and external) to be facilitated by establishing clear referral protocols.
- Provide first line and ongoing counselling for women/birthing people and their families diagnosis of fetal anomaly.
- Potential opportunity to support services for women that are at risk of pre-term birth.
