The Opportunity
The Catholic Diocese of Maitland-Newcastle is seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Financial Accountant to join our dynamic finance team to support our Early Education and OOSH agency, St Nicholas. This is a permanent, full-time position based at the St Nicholas head office in Newcastle West.
As a Financial Accountant, you’ll play a key role in ensuring accurate and timely financial management. Your responsibilities will include financial accounting tasks, general ledger management, compliance, budgeting, variance analysis and reporting. You’ll also assist with strategic analysis and contribute to continuous improvement initiatives in financial processes and systems.
In addition, you’ll have the opportunity to collaborate with stakeholders, delivering exceptional customer service while maintaining compliance with accounting and taxation standards. Your role will be varied, engaging, and vital in ensuring our team’s success.

POSITION DESCRIPTION
This role will support the Finance Manager in ensuring the proper financial management of the Diocese Education sector – St Nicholas agency.
EXPERIENCE/CRITERIA
- Strong attention to detail and high accuracy levels
- Self-motivated with the ability to work with minimum supervision
- Previous work experience in a similar role
- An understanding of and the application of key accounting concepts and taxation
- Analytical and strategic thinking skills and an ability to apply initiative
- Demonstrated commitment to continuous improvement, ability to work to deadlines and effective time management
- Moderate level computer literacy including experience with developing and managing Microsoft Excel spreadsheets
- Excellent interpersonal and communication (written and oral) skills, including polite telephone manner
QUALIFICATIONS
- Accounting or business degree (or working towards)
- Current Working With Children Check (WWCC)
