POSITION SUMMARY

Primarily reporting to the Faculty General Manager, the Director, Finance (AMHSP) will have a secondary reporting relationship to the Vice Dean of Faculty Affairs, and will be responsible for working collaboratively as part of a multi-organizational team to provide financial oversight for the program. This position is responsible for developing financial policies and procedures under the AMHSP framework, as well as other essential details required for the AMHSP operations. In addition, this role will support the cost-share program in place for the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry with all Departments that participate. A faculty focus lens is required to ensure consistency with this program.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Minimum seven to ten years of experience as a CPA is required accompanied by a business administration degree or equivalent experience.
  • Knowledge of healthcare policies and the healthcare environment in Alberta.
  • Extensive experience and knowledge in strategic planning and program evaluation.
  • Proven ability to successfully lead and manage change in large, complex organizations and partnerships, which have minimal direct authority or reporting lines.
  • Exceptional critical thinking and problem-solving ability.
  • Excellent written and oral presentation skills- ability to clearly explain complex concepts.
  • Exceptional interpersonal and relationship-building skills.
  • Exceptional technical skills with Excel or other budgeting and HR software (HCM, Annual Report System, Tableau, Pvt Tables and advanced formulas).
  • Demonstrated ability to provide information and advice to all levels across the University, AH and AHS with a high degree of credibility.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Knowledge of the teaching, research and clinical missions and services delivered by academic medicine and the complex environment in which it functions would be an asset.
  • Knowledge of financial administration, budgeting, human resources administration and governance at the University of Alberta would be an asset.

Responsibilities:

Budgeting/Financial (50%)

This position will be responsible for the consistent application of financial processes across the various departments, and consolidate the financial and workforce-planning submissions from the departments for review by the various stakeholders. This position is independent of the Senior Financial Partner and Financial Partners however works in collaboration with these partners.

  • Financial Oversight & Reporting: Manages funding flow, including financial operations, restricted fund balances, and audits. Reviews departmental budgets, conducts variance analyses, prepares financial justifications, and compiles consolidated reports for governance committees, AHS, AH, and other stakeholders.
  • Workforce Planning & Coordination: Oversees workforce planning, consolidating clinical and academic requirements. Coordinates department submissions, ensures compliance with policies, and supports senior leadership in balancing clinical and academic services.
  • Policy Development & Compliance: Develops and enforces financial policies and procedures across departments, ensuring uniform processes. Ensures accurate billing, uPlan budgets, and forecasts for AMHSP and Cost-Share positions.
  • Stakeholder Communication & Representation: Acts as the Faculty liaison on AMHSP financial matters, representing FoMD in provincial working groups. Prepares KPI data for AMHSP reports and informs leadership of financial challenges, offering actionable recommendations.

Project Management (30%)

This position will be responsible for the successful financial implementation of the AMHSP plans through effective communication and collaboration with the various stakeholders.

  • Project Leadership & Change Management: Initiates, plans, and executes projects to achieve AMHSP and FOMD goals, including identifying needs, building consensus, developing project plans, and managing organizational change. Oversees departmental project managers or consultants and ensures alignment with standard project management methodologies.
  • Policy & Framework Development: Collaborates with AH, AHS, FoMD, and other stakeholders to continuously review, refine, and develop policies and frameworks related to AMHSP operations, ensuring alignment with institutional strategies.
  • Committee Participation & Stakeholder Support: Contributes to Northern Zone AMHSP committee discussions and decisions on budgets, workforce plans, financial results, memberships, agreements, and policy development. Provides coaching and leadership to department chairs, directors, and managers to develop needs-based plans aligned with AMHSP goals.
  • Knowledge Sharing & Compliance: Stays informed of changes in AMHSP and physician practice environments, sharing best practices across provinces and institutions. Ensures compliance with Master Agreements and Individual Service Agreements, actively participating in agreement renegotiations and clarifying responsibilities between AHS and UA.

Stakeholder Relations (20%)

This position will be responsible for the effective working relationships with individual department heads, managers, other internal FoMD stakeholders and external stakeholders to effectively implement and maintain the AMHSP.

  • Stakeholder Engagement & Relationship Management: Builds and maintains relationships with key partners, including Alberta Health, AHS, Cumming School of Medicine, and FOMD leadership. Acts as the primary contact for cost-sharing agreements and collaborates with stakeholders to align recruitment decisions and address inquiries.
  • Knowledge Sharing & Awareness: Promotes AMHSP awareness through presentations, conferences, and training sessions (e.g., AMHSP 101). Communicates learnings to enhance understanding and alignment across HR, Development, FP Network, and arrangement Chairs.
  • Performance Strategy & Financial Oversight: Develops and leads strategies for academic and financial performance indicators, ensuring alignment with institutional goals. Oversees Cost Share and Laboratory Medicine & Pathology agreements, including multi-year financial projections, recruitment impacts, and regular reviews of financial statements for accuracy and compliance.
  • Compliance, Reporting & Communication: Manages compliance with Cost Share agreements, prepares financial reports, and ensures accurate documentation and audits. Aligns efforts between the AMHSP Finance Director and Coordinator, scheduling regular check-ins to review priorities, address challenges, and maintain adherence to institutional and regulatory mandates.
