TEAM & JOB OVERVIEW
EDC’s Small Business & Partnerships (“SB&P”) group provides financing solutions in support of Canadian exports and foreign investments to:
- Canadian exporters and their foreign customers;
- Canadian investors and their foreign affiliates; and
- Financial institutions.
Within SB&P, the International Financing Guarantees team is looking for an enthusiastic finance professional who works well in a team environment, and enjoys interacting with colleagues, banks and clients on a regular basis.
With the customer’s need always in view and in close collaboration with EDC’s Business Development, Legal Services, Environmental Social & Governance (“ESG”) plus our external banking partners both domestically and internationally, the successful candidate will be relied upon to understand the customer’s needs, underwrite financing loan guarantees which addresses those needs, assess the credit risk and recommend risk mitigation strategies as appropriate to achieve the optimal balance between customer-centricity and EDC’s business requirements.
DISCIPLINE SUMMARY
- Works in collaboration with business customers, financial institutions and other organizations to secure financing;
- Structures and delivers tailored financing solutions (defined broadly to include guarantee structures) that support the specific product and service needs of customers primarily in the small and medium segments (encompassing enterprises with revenues up to 300 million annually).
- Analyzes the needs of customers and transaction delivery processes to suggest the best financial tool to meet the need;
- Assesses the risk of proposed solutions and establishes appropriate transaction pricing;
- Assists the business development teams with on-going customer service throughout the transaction process;
- Negotiates changes to the terms and structure of existing transactions and recommends these by assessing the risk of proposed solutions and establishing appropriate transaction pricing;
- Conducts regular risk analysis and credit reviews of loan guarantees.
Key Responsibilities
- The Underwriting & Credit Risk job function is an essential part of EDC’s core business services for our customers. This job function identifies, assesses, and manages credit & non-credit, transaction, and portfolio related risks.
- Independently leads proportionate share of transactions with increasing complexity requiring greater in-depth credit analysis;
- Leads or advises on, with minimal guidance, the assessment/validation and recommendation of common, defined credit/non-credit risks and mitigants. Under guidance, undertakes the assessment/validation and recommendation of complex, irregular and/or significant credit/non-credit risks involving broad sets of mitigants. OR for same endorses, authorizes and/or provides advice on risks, mitigants and related processes and guidelines. Determines financial eligibility of customers, borrowers and other counter parties and drafts and/or reviews documents to deliver products;
- Recommends and approves transactions within specified parameters, policies and guidelines;
- Leads or advises on, with minimal guidance, all structuring activities and negotiations for conventional, repeat transactions involving minimal customization. Under guidance, structures and negotiates complex, irregular transactions involving unique sectors, customized structures and/or few precedents. OR for same provides advice, assessment and subject matter knowledge on transaction structures, policy/guideline interpretation, and process management.
- Provides on-going customer service and support to ensure customer satisfaction throughout the transactional process;
- Understands financing issues, financial markets terminology and general lending/underwriting practices and, with moderate supervision, applies this knowledge to the risk underwriting and mitigation process;
- Supports account management function in managing customer expectations at various stages of the process;
- Working closely with Legal Services, drafts and/or reviews documents to deliver products for transactions;
- Develop and lead negotiations, explain difficult issues and work to establish consensus;
- Identify shortcomings and suggest improvements to existing processes, systems and procedures, then delivers a plan for a small element of a change management program with guidance from a project/program manager.
- May oversee work, coach and train more junior transactors.
