If so, please apply to join our team to produce and supply trout for the nearby lakes and streams! Fish Springs Hatchery, located near the town of Big Pine in Inyo County of the Eastern Sierra, Fish Springs Hatchery is a major producer of trout for the excellent fishing in nearby waters. Tule elk can often be viewed in the area, in addition to mule deer and myriad other wildlife.
Under the supervision of the Fish Hatchery Manager I; you are to perform the duties as a Fish and Wildlife Technician: Work assignments may occur at other facilities and locations. Perform all the necessary and required duties as required, for the position of a Fish and Wildlife Technician. Employee will work standby, weekends and holidays in rotation with co-workers. The employee is required to live in State housing, keeping it and its yard in good condition at all times. Employee is required to wear the specified approved uniform.
This position will learn about and is responsible for supporting the Department’s Inland Fisheries Program. Duties include overall fish production from culture to eggs to fry and beyond. It also includes learning national water sampling protocols, hatchery and grounds upkeep, light equipment maintenance, transporting fish to a variety of waters and more. This position is also a member of Regional Fish Vaccination Team, requiring periodic reimbursed travel which may last for periods of a week or more.

Working Conditions
Work in all weather conditions such as wind, rain, extreme heat, cold and direct sunlight. Open and close various types of valves, climb steep banks when necessary. Work near waters with uneven terrain and unpredictable flows. Climb ladders, operate various types of unusual support equipment used in the operation of the hatchery. Willingness to work throughout the State and at unusual hours; willingness to work on Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays. Possess a valid California driver’s license Class C Driver’s License with the ability to upgrade to a Class A within a year of appointment, which is a commercial license with proper endorsements to operate and maintain commercial planting vehicles.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENT: This position requires the employee to reside in State-Owned Housing at Fish Springs Creek Hatchery.
