DESCRIPTION OF WORK UNIT

Founded in 1870, Colorado State University is among the nation’s leading research universities and enrolls approximately 32,000 undergraduate, graduate, and professional students. The CO Cooperative Fish & Wildlife Research (CCFWRU) Unit provides research, education and technical assistance as one of 40 nationwide Cooperative Research Units by virtue of a formal contractual Cooperative Agreement between the US Geological Survey, Colorado State University, Colorado Parks and Wildlife and the Wildlife Management Institute. The CCFWRU is housed in the Department of Fish, Wildlife, and Conservation Biology.

POSITION SUMMARY

We seek an outstanding individual to evaluate the effects of water temperature and quality and aquatic animal health. The RA will perform research projects associated with effects of water temperature on fish survival and physiology, including design, statistical analysis, and troubleshooting functions. The RA will also be responsible for maintaining ongoing research into fish diseases, including designing experiments, statistical and modeling analyses. The RA will be responsible for reporting and submitting research to peer-reviewed publications. Specific projects will be identified through routine prioritization processes within Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW) and collaboration with Colorado Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit. The primary function of this research associate is to provide additional lab support and capabilities to ongoing aquatic toxicology and fish health projects being in collaboration with CPW Aquatic Research Section.

REQUIRED JOB QUALIFICATIONS

  • B.S. degree in fisheries or a closely related field.
  • Experience with designing and executing both laboratory and field experiments to evaluate fish health relative to water quality and disease.
  • Experience in both toxicology and fish disease related research
  • Must have a valid driver’s license or the ability to obtain a driver’s license or access to a licensed driver by the employment start date.

PREFERRED JOB QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience with statistical analyses of fish health and toxicology data.
  • Experience with R-programming and statistical analyses.
  • Experience with writing technical reports and publishing peer-reviewed research.
  • ECG Electrocardiogram for Rainbow Trout and Native sucker experience.
  • Experience communicating with stakeholders, in the context of fishery research
  • Experience completing all the necessary paperwork relative to animal experiments, such as Animal Use Protocols, Institutional Biosafety, collecting permits and any other relevant documentation required by CSU or other agencies.
  • The ability to work in physically challenging field conditions to collect data on water quality and fish populations.
