QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS

  • High school graduation or the equivalent
  • Possession of a valid automobile operator’s license
  • Minimum 7 years of progressively responsible journeyman level vehicular maintenance and repair work experience
  • Minimum 2 years of supervisory work experience or directing the work of others
  • Possession of current refrigerant certification issued by Environmental Protection Agency to comply with the Clean Air Act, Section 609
  • Intermediate skills in Microsoft Office Suite

KNOWLEDGE / SKILLS / ABILITIES:

  • Ability to maintain County Authorized Driver privileges
  • Ability to effectively supervise, direct, and follow up on the work performance of others
  • Ability to effectively evaluate priorities and schedule staff workloads
  • Ability to effectively estimate material costs and labor hours and to accurately prepare related forms and reports
  • Ability to effectively organize and prioritize work, direct the work of others, and work with limited supervision
  • Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, vendors, upper management, elected officials as well as the public
  • Skill in the repair and maintenance of automobile and related equipment
  • Strong and effective spoken and written (English) communication skills
  • Considerable knowledge of equipment and vehicle operations and repairs, DOT inspections (if applicable)
  • Considerable knowledge of the tools, equipment, materials, and parts used in vehicle repair
  • Considerable knowledge of potential hazards associated with this work and appropriate safety precautions
  • Knowledge of County and departmental rules, regulations, policies, and procedures
  • Strong clerical and record-keeping skills, including the ability to accurately perform basic math and financial functions
  • Ability to accurately compile and prepare statistical data and reports
  • Ability to effectively access and utilize Microsoft Office Suite, e-mail, spreadsheet, and other systems and equipment, and to learn new software as it is required

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • While working in this position, the employee is required to frequently sit, walk, lift up to 20 pounds, reach and make repetitive motions; occasionally climb, stoop and drive; and rarely crawl, lift between 20 and 50 lbs, push over 40 lbs, pulling over 40 lbs
  • While working in this position, the employee is required to constantly work indoors; frequently work outdoors walking on uneven ground, exposed to hot temperatures above 100 degrees, work in dirt and dust and occasionally exposed to cold temperatures below 32 degrees and wear protective equipment

Responsibilities:

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Plan, organize, assign and supervise work associated with shop
  • Direct, supervise and evaluate the work performance of assigned staff; approve leave and timesheets and discipline staff as needed
  • Oversee, prioritize, coordinate, assign and track work orders; develop and maintain the schedule for work orders; ensure completed work orders are closed and repair time and repair parts are billed correctly
  • Maintain automated records of repair operation activities and provide detailed reports when requested
  • Create and maintain regular inspection and maintenance schedules; coordinate repairs to ensure repairs are completed following safety regulations
  • Assist with purchasing new vehicles by researching and providing specifications; attend meetings regarding the purchasing process
  • Oversee the process of new vehicles being up fitted for in-service
  • Prepare and obtain quotes; perform analysis of costs associated with repairs
  • Inspect and evaluate vehicles involved in accidents for repairs
  • Provide technical advice and assistance to staff; supervise the quality of work performed by vendors and staff; coordinate repairs and recalls with external vendors
  • Recommend and draft policies and procedures for assigned shop
  • Attend meetings, trainings, and conferences as needed; provide training opportunities for staff
  • Manage procurement card and monthly statements
  • Review charges to ensure purchases and services are contract compliant
  • Communicate with other county departments on repair progress
  • Manage and oversee shop inventory
  • As needed, perform minor mechanical repairs
  • Perform general administrative duties to including photocopying, filing, etc.
  • Perform other duties as assigned
