DESCRIPTION:

Under the general supervision of the Manager Fleet, the Fleet Standards Specialist is responsible for ensuring all fleet units are designed, built, and maintained to comply with government regulations and FortisAlberta design requirements.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES:

  • Detailed knowledge of Alberta Transportation Motor Vehicle Legislation.
  • Technical knowledge in the design of electrical, hydraulic, air, vacuum, braking, power, exhaust, suspension, gearing, stability, hoisting, winching, structural, fastening of fuel systems in automotive, trailers, off road and heavy-duty utility vehicles and equipment.
  • Proven ability to develop and maintain effective relationships with team members and customers (both internal and external); this includes excellent communication, interpersonal and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent customer service skills and an ability to anticipate and meet the expectations and requirements of internal and external customers.
  • Proficient computer skills – working knowledge of SAP and Microsoft applications (Word, Outlook, Excel) including development and maintenance of basic spreadsheets and formulas.
  • Good organizational skills in order to effectively manage numerous activities and competing demands within tight deadlines.
  • Knowledge of AutoCad or equivalent software is an asset.
  • Solid analytical skills in order to troubleshoot and diagnose problems in a methodical and logical manner.
  • Demonstrated initiative in recognizing opportunities for improvement, efficiency, and safety.
  • Proven ability to work in a team environment or independently with minimal direction or supervision.
  • Ability to develop generic equipment and manufacturing specifications and interpret such specifications.
  • Knowledge of and experience diagnosing and repairing mechanical, structural, electrical, and hydraulic systems for automotive, heavy duty, and utility vehicles and equipment.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Journeyman Heavy Duty Mechanic or Journeyman Automotive Mechanic certificate plus a minimum of 3 (three) years of related experience in vocational truck upfitting is required.
  • A Journeyman Parts Technician with 3 years of experience may also be considered.
  • A valid Class 5 Driver’s License is required.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Post-secondary certification in drafting or design would be an asset.
  • Experience working in a regulated environment, preferably within the electrical/energy industry would be an asset.

Responsibilities:

  • Develop and maintain professional relationships with vehicle manufacturing and equipment suppliers.
  • Maintain advanced knowledge of Motor Transport regulations and Occupational Health and Safety regulations which pertain to vehicles and utility equipment.
  • Ensure vehicle configurations used in operations meet or exceed regulatory requirements.
  • Work closely with the Work Methods and Fleet Advisory teams to identify solutions to satisfy operating concerns.
  • Manage requests for quotation tenders for new vehicles and associated equipment and work with the Fleet Manager to award tenders.
  • Requisition vehicle equipment for new and replacement vehicles while maintaining knowledge of current products, pricing, and services.
  • Maintain detailed knowledge of changing Company, technological and industry requirements and how these affect business operations.
  • Prepare manufacturing and ordering documentation that meets industry and regulation standards and user group needs, ensuring configuration specifications and other related manufacturing details are clearly identified.
  • Research, design, and maintain all vehicle equipment configurations through consultation with user groups including the Fleet department and suppliers.
  • Analyze vehicle operating requirements to develop unique, specialized configurations and facilitate cross Company standardization where appropriate and valuable.
  • Coordinate capital work required for new and retrofit vehicles and equipment in the build process, this includes preferred supplies and other vendors and the ordering of FortisAlberta items.
  • Monitor performance of vehicle manufacturing and equipment suppliers by performing pre-delivery inspections to ensure quality and quantity meets specifications and standards.
  • Develop and maintain strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders to provide a high level of customer satisfaction.
  • Act as a resource for maintenance issues and assist with repairs as required.
  • Maintain a strong knowledge of company vehicles and equipment, and their current use.
  • Assist Fleet Management with evaluating and providing input to design structural modifications to existing service vehicles and equipment and ensure any changes meet with relevant Standards.
  • Provide assistance when receiving approval required by FortisAlberta for unique vehicle designs by working with the field staff and the work methods and fleet advisory team.
  • Assist with recommendations for fleet vehicles and equipment and replacement criteria.
  • Identify opportunities to implement Electric Vehicle (EV) technology into the fleet
  • Work with Fleet Analysts and Fleet Supervisors in scheduling and installation of all Communication equipment (i.e. mobile radio and pedestal modem installations)
  • Special projects and other duties as assigned
